Dating 1965

In 1965, a team of Harvard undergrads created Operation Match, the world's first computer dating service. For $3, users could answer questionnaires and receive a list of potential matches, a process that is still used by many dating sites. By the early 1970s, the focus had turned to the dark side of computer dating, including fraud, misrepresentation, and violations of privacy. 3 Perhaps the most bizarre twist from this period was a Times Square bookseller who used its customer data to start its own computerized dating service — without their customer’s knowledge. However, the Case dating system also adds to the appeal and collectibility because the knives can be easily identified and dated. Case has been marking its knives with tang stamps from the beginning. Dating today could not be more different than it was half a century ago. Today, the dating world is overrun by apps, websites, and online matchmaking services that make it possible to find your soulmate with the swipe of a finger. But in the 1950s, dating was far more complicated. People had to jump through hoops, dial numbers on landlines, and ask parents for permission before they could so ... [UPDATE] Startling breakthrough in Australian Wanda Beach murders.

2020.09.26 02:38 The_Plow_King [UPDATE] Startling breakthrough in Australian Wanda Beach murders.

The Wanda Beach murders are the case of the unsolved murders of Marianne Schmidt and Christine Sharrock at Wanda Beach near Cronulla in Sydney, Australia on 11 January 1965. The victims, both aged 15, were best friends and neighbours from the suburb of West Ryde, and their partially buried bodies were discovered the next day. The brutal nature of the slayings and the fact that they occurred on a deserted, windswept beach brought massive publicity to the case. By April 1966, police had interviewed some 7,000 people, making it the largest investigation in Australian history.
A paedophile who abused his own daughter and sister may have confessed to the Wanda Beach murders seven years after two schoolgirls were found partially buried at the beach. “I did that,” he told his then-girlfriend in 1972.
The alleged confession came to light years later when the man was being investigated for sexually abusing his daughter.
The victim, now aged in her 40s, told police in 2016 she had been subject to abuse at the hands of her father from four until 11.
The victim's mother revealed to police her former husband claimed he was the Wanda Beach murderer when the couple first started dating.
'While we were sitting in his car, (he) turned to me and out of the blue asked me if I remembered the Wanda Beach murders … then said quite calmly words to the effect of 'I did that',' she told police.
The woman told police she felt 'startled' but thought he was making a joke. She responded with something like 'don't be silly, you did not'.
'(He) did not respond straight away but after looking at me and obviously seeing the startled expression on my face said something similar to ''Nah I didn't. I'm only kidding'',' she told police.
The woman also advised officers she believed her former husband is 'capable of anything'.
The man is now serving an eight year prison sentence for the sexual abuse of his daughter. The former car salesman was convicted in 2018.
The man's younger sister was one of two other women who also told police they were sexually abused by him as a child.
Police have reportedly been advised the convicted sex abuser went to the same school as Marianne - Marsden High School - and lived locally.
It's understood he enjoyed surfing as a teenager and frequently visited Sydney beaches including Cronulla.
The man cannot be named to protect the identity of his daughter,
Marianne's brother Hans Schmidt said the revelation should lead to further investigations.
'Anything that would bring closure to the whole case would obviously be of great interest to the family,' Mr Schmidt said.
He said his brother Wolfgang remembered seeing a 'blond surfer guy' on the day of the teenager's murders.

2020.09.25 20:58 Deathbringspasta The Odd Disappearance of Daniel Barter

To begin this story, we need to jump back in time to the year 1959, in Perdido Bay, Alabama. The date was June 18th, 1959, and the Barter family who lived in the 1700 block of Thrush Drive in the nearby city of Mobile, Alabama, were enjoying a camping trip in the Perdido Bay area. This trip consisted of Daniel Barter, his mother Maxine Barter, 3 of his 6 siblings, and one of his cousins. His other 3 siblings were staying with some relatives. This campsite was not much more than an hour from their home in Mobile.
Sometime between 9:30 and 10:00 a.m., While Daniel’s parents were preparing their fishing equipment for the day, Daniel would wander off from the rest of his family. At the time, he was carrying a bottle of Nehi soda around with him. Maxine Barter did not seem to notice Daniel’s absence until about 10 to 15 minutes later. She began searching for her son but could not locate him or any sign of him anywhere. Not long after this, authorities were called in and began a full search of the immediate area.
Now, what concerns me the most is the area Daniel went missing in. Being from the state of Florida, I have grown up in swampy areas my entire life. I even used to swim in them from time to time, stupid of me I know. Swampy areas not only hold many dangerous critters, but they have endless nooks and crannies for someone to fall into and never be heard from again. This specific swampy area in the Perdido Bay area is highly infested with alligators. The possibility of Daniel being attacked by one of these animals is unfortunately rather high. So much so that officials caught 2 alligators and cut them open, but to no avail.
Multiple groups of civilian volunteers came together to search the area, walking shoulder to shoulder in groups of 25. They did this in a 5-mile radius of the area and combed it extensively, looking for any sign of Daniel. This massive group peaked at around 2,000 people, including 300 members of the local US Navy and military bases and over 150 law enforcement officers and firemen from Alabama, Florida, and other close states.
Bloodhounds and other scent dogs were brought in to search the area as well as Jeeps, helicopters, horses, and more, but again nothing would be found. Not even the Nehi soda bottle was ever found. Somehow, this 4-year-old boy simply vanished into thin air, never to be seen again. Divers searched from the top of the bay down into the swampy areas, finding nothing once again.
The bottom of the lake was dragged, and sinkholes and thickets were searched thoroughly. Authorities hoped that in doing this they may jar out a body that could be stuck on the bottom. Dynamite was even tossed in areas he may have fallen as well. This sounds a bit extreme to me, but I guess I would not be the authority on that.
According to Daniel’s mother, Maxine Barter, Daniel did not like the water, and she does not think he would have gone into the bay by himself. The bay was exceptionally shallow at that time of day, you could walk a considerable distance without getting all that wet. The brush around the family’s campsite was very thick and prickly. Daniel was only wearing a pair of shorts at the time with no shoes. The Barter family does not believe he would have gone into the bushes either.
After over a week of tirelessly searching the area turned up little to nothing, officials decided it was unlikely Daniel walked into the water or woods around them on his own. This was one of the most intensive searches ever conducted in Baldwin County history. Authorities began to investigate the likelihood of this being an abduction. They were never able to find any clues or evidence supporting this theory though. The Barter family was not a wealthy one and they never received any sort of ransom note or message. Making a motive of ransom unlikely.
Things would only grow to be stranger from here on out though. According to Daniel’s mother, roughly a month or so before Daniel would disappear, she claims to have seen a mysterious unknown vehicle parked in front of their house. Maxine would allegedly approach the car and attempt to confront the driver. She said a man was driving and he immediately covered his face with a newspaper and drove off. To make this claim a bit more valid, a neighbor of the Barter family claims they saw a man acting strangely and peering into the window of the room Daniel and his brothers slept in. The neighbor would mention this to Maxine, and they investigated the place the man had been standing. The man, of course, was gone but he had left footprints in the dirt under the window.
They would call the police who came and photographed the footprints and took casts of them. Since this was nearly 60 years ago, it is unclear if this evidence even exists anymore. I do want to mention, that even though this case is old, there is still a chance we can help progress it. While I do not have the highest hopes that justice will be brought here, I do still think it is unbelievably valuable to keep the memory and story of Daniel Barter going. If only as a cautionary tale for parents out there. The last thing I would like to mention in the timeline of strange happenings is that on the morning of Daniel’s disappearance, Maxine drove him and one of his brothers to the store. She parked and went inside, leaving the boys in the car. While she was gone, an unknown man drove up next to the Barter’s car and stared at the boys for an uncomfortable amount of time. Then the man suddenly drove away without speaking a word to them. Daniel’s brother would tell Maxine about this encounter when she returned to the car.
Due to this odd sequence of events, the Barters heavily suspect that someone had been stalking the family for some time, with intentions to abduct Daniel. Unfortunately, the case would go cold and would fall inactive until just recently. Nearly 50 years after Daniel disappeared his case was reopened in 2008. That was 12 years ago, and we are still in desperate need of help to bring justice to Daniel. Many of the original case files have been lost or destroyed in the last 6 decades. Making this that much harder to piece together. I have seen cases with less info be solved recently though, so I do have faith that Daniel Barter may have his day of justice.
I have found several theories online and in articles as to what happened to Daniel. I will briefly touch on a few of these theories. The main theory is of course that Daniel was abducted by an unknown suspect. Due to the timeline shared by the family, this is the strongest belief. A second theory and one of the early theories of this case is that Daniel accidentally drowned in the Perdido Bay. Even though the family heavily refutes this as he did not like the water. But the tides were incredibly low and easy enough for a toddler to walk a fair distance without getting very wet at all. The third theory is that Daniel may have gotten lost while walking around the area of the campsite. Since the brush was so thick, it would not be impossible that Daniel got turned around and became lost. But, since the area was searched so thoroughly, this is unlikely. The fourth and final theory I will be touching on is the idea that Daniel may have been attacked and possibly eaten by an alligator. Now, this is a bit extreme but, in an area, with several alligators, this is not unfathomable. Multiple large gators were hunted in the area and gutted, but no evidence of human remains was found.
Sadly, Daniel’s father died in 1965 and his mother followed in 1995. Both never knowing what truly happened to their son. All the siblings that were alive during the disappearance are still alive and that he is still out there and hope the case will be resolved one day. In 2009, the family returned to the campsite to remember their missing brother and dedicated a half-century mission to find him.
Daniel Barter went missing from the Perdido Bay, Alabama area on June 18th, 1959. He was just four years of age at the time and was last seen wearing grey boxer shorts and carrying a bottle of Nehi soda. He was 3 feet tall and weighed 50 pounds at the time of his disappearance. His hair his brown and so are his eyes, he has scars on his fingers and one on his tongue. His case is currently labeled as a non-family abduction and if he is still alive, he would be 64 years old. If you or anyone you may know have any information on this case, please send in your tips to Baldwin County Sheriff’s Office, 251-972-8589. You can always remain anonymous.

2020.09.25 19:45 trifletruffles Mattie Greene-killed in a bomb explosion in Ringgold, Georgia on May 19, 1960-Closed Case under the Civil Rights Division Emmett Till Act

Mattie Greene was the mother of six children when she was killed in a dynamite explosion that destroyed her home in Ringgold, Georgia on May 19, 1960. She was 32 years old at the time. Mattie's husband, Jethro, and 13 year old Jethro Jr., 6 year old David, 4 year old William, along with 17 month old Larry were also at home during the explosion and suffered minor injuries. Mattie's remaining two children were not home at the time as they were staying at their grandmother's. Authorities initially suspected Jethro of planting the bomb since he only suffered a bruised shoulder and investigations revealed that Mattie was involved in an extramarital affair which provided a motive. However, he was eventually cleared. Governor Ernest Vandiver offered a $500 reward for any information and despite the involvement of the FBI, no one was ever arrested for Mattie's murder.
Jethro served in the U.S. Army during World War II as a construction foreman. After the war ended, he worked as an auto mechanic and married Mattie who worked as a housekeeper. After clearing Jethro, authorities suspected that he and his family might have been targeted due to his possible involvement with the NAACP. However, it is unclear if he was a NAACP member since NAACP records regarding Ringgold and Catoosa County were not kept. A local sheriff, J.D. Stewart, suspected that many men were meeting at a local home under the pretense of being part of a singing group but these men were actually holding NAACP meetings. Jethro was noted to have been part of a singing group and was often featured on local Chattanooga radio thus lending some credence to Sheriff Stewart's suspicions. Nevertheless, the extent of Jethro's advocacy remains unclear and his 1994 obituary only lists an affiliation with the A. Randolph Institute which advocated for labor rights.
2009 FBI Investigation:
In April 2009, as part of efforts to solve civil rights-era homicide cases, the FBI in conjunction with the Department of Justice started an investigation of Mattie's murder under the Emmett Till Civil Rights Act. The FBI tried to review initial investigation files but they were all either destroyed in a flood during the 1970s or general document retention procedures. Thus, most of the information from the investigation comes from a redacted copy of the initial FBI file provided to the Southern Poverty Law Center. Since the files were lost or destroyed, the FBI began its current investigation by interviewing various relatives and children of Mattie. They also interviewed members of the community who were familiar with Lester Waters and W.E. Watters as they were rumored to have been involved in the explosion.
Mattie's [relationship and name redacted] was interviewed by the FBI. She stated that, at the time, she was told by Sheriff Stewart that Lester had confessed to the crime and that guilt had driven him crazy. Sheriff Stewart also told her that he transported Lester to a mental institution in Milledgeville, Georgia. Another of Mattie's [relationship and name redacted] similarly stated she was approached by a white woman years ago who said Lester was involved and it drove him crazy to the point where he had to be taken to a Milledgeville institution.
Based on these two recollections, the FBI conducted interviews with W.E. and Lester's family. Lester, W.E. and Sheriff Stewart are now deceased. Lester's [relationship and name redacted] stated that another possible suspect, [name redacted], was active in the Ku Klux Klan and that [name redacted] was good friends with Sheriff Stewart and Lester; they would often hold meetings at Lester's house which centered around a hatred of blacks and Jews. Accordingly, the FBI interviewed [name redacted] who denied they had anything to do with Mattie's murder. It was noted that [name redacted] worked for U.S. Pipe and Foundry on an I-75 construction project at the time. [Name redacted]'s place of employment is interesting because the original FBI file noted that the I-75 construction project involved demolition, namely the use of ammonium nitrate and electric dynamite caps. The initial investigation file noted that a piece of red and orange wire was found near Mattie's home; this wire was the type used in manufacturing electric dynamite caps. The 1960 investigation file is unclear regarding whether the FBI pursued this lead any further beyond calling the superintendent of U.S. Pipe and Foundry.
After interviewing [name redacted], the FBI tried to find out more about the type of work [name redacted] would have been involved in. Original employment records were destroyed but the FBI was able to get in touch with an operations manager who noted that in 1960, no dynamite would have been present at the work site due to the type of work being done. The FBI asked [name redacted] to take a polygraph test which they passed. As the FBI was not able to develop any new leads, the Department of Justice closed the case. Mattie's murder remains unsolved.
Discussion:
The closing memorandum discussed Jethro as a suspect after investigations showed that Mattie was involved in an extramarital affair. While an individual was identified, it is unclear if this individual was questioned. For some reason, Jethro's name was redacted in the memorandum when it discussed his injuries as noted by the statement "it seemed almost impossible, after viewing the scene, that XXX suffered as little injury as XXX" but based on the context, I was able to surmise the memorandum was discussing Jethro.

I came across the Department of Justice’s cold case initiative (Emmett Till Civil Rights Act) while reading an article discussing journalists’ efforts to install a billboard on an Arkansas highway aimed at solving the 1954 lynching of Isadore Banks. The Civil Rights Division of the United States Department of Justice launched a website (linked above) to make information about the department’s investigation of cold cases from the Civil Rights Era more accessible to the public. As a result of the initiative, the Department of Justice has prosecuted and convicted Edgar Ray Killen for the 1964 murders of three civil rights workers in Philadelphia, Mississippi (the "Mississippi Burning" case); he is the eight defendant convicted. The Department has also been able to charge and convict perpetrators of the 1963 Sixteenth Street Baptist Church bombing in Birmingham, Alabama and secured a life sentence for James Ford Seale for the kidnapping and murder of two teenagers in Franklin County, Mississippi in 1964.
Unfortunately, many cases which were submitted to the Department of Justice remain unsolved due to the passage of time resulting in evidentiary and legal barriers. In each case that is not prosecutable, the Department of Justice wrote a closing memorandum explaining the investigative steps taken and the basis for their conclusion. To date, the Department of Justice has uploaded 115 closing memos. I hope to be able to post on all of the closed cases as I share in the belief with the Department of Justice that “these stories should be told [as] there is value in a public reckoning with the history of racial violence and the complicity of government officials.”

Request for help dating a rosary. ~1918-1930
Hello,
BLUF : Looking for help dating a rosary for proper cataloging to the individual who owned it. Presently striking out, the other rosary I have been able to identify purely on fashion trend and construction technologies available. ie (Glow in the dark beads translate to after 1973)
Background: I inherited my father's genealogy research and family artifacts. Being a devote Catholic family this means multiple bibles and rosaries. I have narrowed the below rosary to two individual (great grandma, and grandma). As items are identified i am preserving the artifact and paperwork appropriately for generations to come.
Key identification of the piece is IHS (Christogram/Latin so pre 1965) and additionally the back states Czechoslovakia (1918-1993). Any pointers or even subreddits i will take..

Hello,

My goal: Determine if the rosary dates before 1926 is my best case scenario. GGma passed in 1933, Gma(B.1926.D.2003) likely went through the Catholic Sacrament of Reconciliation around ~1934-1935 where at that time i believe she should have received a rosary.
Key identification of the piece is IHS (Christogram/Latin so pre 1965) and additionally the back states Czechoslovakia (1918-1993). I have included a link to a post i made on imgur (hope mods are ok with this). Any pointers or even subreddits i will take..

We’re no experts, but from what we understand, as per Vaastu Shastra, it's believed that ideally the Marble Radha Krishna Statues should be placed within the north east corner of your home, i.e. the deities should face the south west direction. Therefore, once you worship Marble Radha Krishna Statues, you'll be facing the north east direction. The north, or east also are commonly considered appropriate directions for a placement of a home temple. One the most reasons for this as per the shastras is that the north-east, north or east corner is where the energy of the house emanates and thus is that the best fitted to the pooja mandir and therefore the deities to be seated there.

Traditionally in India, the north east corner is mentioned because the Ishaan corner, which springs from the sanskrit word for Lord, Ishwar and thus transcribes because the ‘Corner of the Lord.’ one more reason these directions are considered auspicious for a pooja temple or all religious activity for that matter whether it's chanting, meditation, or archana, is due to the very fact the Sun or Surya rises within the east and as we all alright know, it's the source and origin of all energy and life during this universe and hence also worshipped in Hinduism. With no disrespect meant to anyone, we truly feel that if our faith in our Lord is true and if our intentions are good and our conscience is obvious , then regardless of what the direction, anywhere where the temple is kept is that the best place within the home, regardless of the direction, because our Lord resides there. It’s just something to think about!

2020.09.24 02:42 OverlordLork [Effortpost 9 of 15] The legislative graveyard

Under current Senate rules, the Senate majority leader has the power to choose if and when a bill comes up for debate. Mitch McConnell has made great use of this power, blocking hundreds of bills in what's often known as the "legislative graveyard". McConnell has even bragged about being the "grim reaper" of bills.
Republican Senators empowered him to do this because it takes the heat off of them. They don't want to pass these bills, but they also don't want to be on the record voting against something that the people want. So instead, they unanimously voted for McConnell to be majority leader so that he could take all the blame.
Here are a few of the bills currently buried in the graveyard:
HR 1 - For the People Act
This is a comprehensive voting rights and anti-corruption overhaul.
It would restore protections from the 1965 Voting Rights Act, which was struck down by the conservative Supreme Court justices on the grounds that Congress failed to keep it up to date. It would make voting easier by mandating that states implement automatic voter registration, online voter registration, and early voting options. It would end gerrymandering by mandating that states implement nonpartisan redistricting commissions. It would restore voting rights to felons who have served their time. It would protect election security by ensuring that all votes cast have a paper trail.
In my voting rights post, I detailed many of the reasons that these reforms are necessary. But since Republicans hate when everyone has the right to vote, McConnell called it a "one-sided power grab".
On the anti-corruption front, it would prevent members of Congress from serving on corporate boards. It would add transparency to the sources of dark money in elections, and of online political ads. It would give teeth to the Federal Election Commission, the Office of Government Ethics, and the Foreign Agents Registration Act Office, so that they could actually go after violations. It would create ethics standards for Supreme Court justices.
Source for the above summary
HR 6800 - HEROES Act
This is a $3 trillion COVID relief bill. It would provide an additional $1200 relief check to all Americans. It would give healthcare workers substantially more workplace protections. It would extend the CARES Act's unemployment benefits. It would help small businesses stay afloat by adding funding to the PPP. It would give a trillion in relief funding to state and local governments. It would fund COVID research, testing, tracing, and treatments. It would delay evictions and provide billions in housing assistance. It would provide for safer conditions in prisons, because they've been responsible for many major outbreaks so far. It would fund the Postal Service. And much more.
HR 1644 - Save the Internet Act
This would have re-implemented net neutrality.
HR 6 - American Dream and Promise Act
Under Obama's DACA policy, immigrants who were brought here as children years ago are able to stay as long as they get an education, register with DACA every 2 years, and don't commit crimes. HR 6 would prevent these protections from being revoked. It also would provide a pathway to citizenship.
HR 269 - Pandemic and All-Hazards Preparedness and Advancing Innovation Act
This bill would have reauthorized pandemic preparedness funding, and updated our pandemic response systems. It was written before COVID-19 existed.
HR 9 - Climate Action Now Act
This would keep us in the Paris Agreement and hold us to the promises we made under that agreement.
HR 582 - Raise the Wage Act
This would raise the minimum wage.
HR 2722 - SAFE Act
This would help secure our elections. It would ensure paper trails for voting, and provide funding to states to secure their systems against hackers.
HR 7120 - George Floyd Justice in Policing Act
This would limit the "qualified immunity" that makes it nearly impossible to win civil suits against officers. It would make it easier for the Department of justice to investigate and prosecute wrongdoing by officers. And it would create the National Police Misconduct Registry.
HR 986 - Protecting Americans With Preexisting Conditions Act
This would undo the Trump administration's decision to let states ignore parts of the ACA that ensure people with preexisting conditions can still get health insurance.
HR 1585 - Violence Against Women Reauthorization Act
The Violence Against Women Act was a law that made it easier to prosecute domestic abusers. It expired in 2019, so this act would have reauthorized it. It also would have closed the "boyfriend loophole" to take guns away from domestic abusers. Currently, this only happens if they were married, living together, and/or had a child together.
HR 8 - Bipartisan Background Checks Act
This would require background checks for private transfers of gun ownership. It has reasonable exceptions such as allowing transfers between immediate family members, or temporary transfers for hunting, or handing a gun to someone who is under imminent threat of attack.
HR 1331 - Local Water Protection Act
This would fund state programs to ensure clean water.
HR 1941 - Coastal and Marine Economies Protection Act
This would renew bans on offshore drilling.
HR 987 - The Strengthening Health Care and Lowering Prescription Drug Costs Act
This act combined seven bills for improving the healthcare system. Three of them would make it easier to roll out cheaper generic drugs, by blocking stalling tactics that pharmaceutical companies use on each other. One would provide funding to help states that want to establish their own state-based insurance marketplaces. One would reimplement the Obama administration's regulations against "junk insurance plans" that fail to properly cover people. And two would make it easier to use the Affordable Care Act marketplace to find coverage.

2020.09.22 19:29 bloorey Where does Younis Khan stand among Pakistan's elite batsmen?

Something i found while checking Younis's career was that he averaged 52 after accumulating 10000+ runs making him one of the only 13 batsmen to compile these much runs.Adding to his stats was a record i came across.
These made me look further into it to realize why, as Younis never had the luxury to play home matches because of Pakistan's ban. His career spanned for 118 games where he was only able to play 19 at home. When he did his average shot to 60.
He definitely goes down as a Test great followed along with Pakistan's Hanif. but when it came to limited overs he didn't spark much as he held a average of 31 despite spanning for a colossal 265 matches there.
Pakistan has along the lines many other good ones too majorly stacking up the middle order. And now there's Babar Azam who's already broken many records his former pakistani batsmen held in ODIs and now already coming closer to Pakistani batsmen test records too.
Then there's Misbah who features a lower average compared to others but that was unfortunes to holding pakistan's weakest batting lineup over its years time by time, by slowing his own innings. A great example is pakistan collapsing to sri lanka for 64-3 just for Misbah to step in and getting out after taking the score to 274-6. Many criticize him for playing slow not realizing the unfortunate role he had to play, when he presented the fastest test century proving if he wanted he could have played for stats.
These unfortunes made me realize how truly unlucky Pakistan's batsmen are. All stalwarts at most times had to play in each different era acting as backbones to a consistently failing batting lineup!
Hanif 1951 > Zaheer 1965 > Javed 1975 > Inzamam 1991 > Misbah 2001 > Babar 2015
Another class display is of Zaheer Abbas who has a very unique record over all of these by being the only batsman in asia to knock in 100 first class centuries. To put into context theres only 25 cricketers who have done such which includes Bradman, Hobbs, Viv and Hammond themselves. What amazes me most about Zaheer is that he adapted to ODI's as soon as the format was birthed and to date holds one of the highest odi averages. Something about a batsmen's ability to adapt to any situation makes me applaud it more.
Now lets chat Javed, Inzamam, Saeed and Yousuf. Pakistan's most consistent and prominent batsmen. The difference that sets them apart from Younis is that these batsmen managed to reply with brilliant knocks and staggering averages over their careers span in Limited Overs and Tests too. Proving themselves to be Pakistan's aid in any format given and possibly the reason why you would see these batsmen more prominently in headlines over Younis albeit being Tests greatest.
So where do you rank Younis in Pakistan's batting lineup?
For openers the choice boils down between Saeed, Babar and Hanif.
But in the middle order if you had to pick 3 batsmen regardless of format who would they be among Javed, Inzamam, Zaheer, Younis, Yousuf and Misbah?

Everything You Need to Know About NFR

Beyond the payouts for the Cowboys, the PRCA estimates that the event brings in about $90 million annually to the Las Vegas economy. Furthermore, recent attendance stats have shown that 177,565 rodeo enthusiasts decked out in Wrangler jeans, Justin boots and cowboy hats attended events at the Thomas & Mack with an additional 40,000 fans who watched at the 40 hotels who hosted watch parties. It is during this rare time of the year that many marquees on the Strip have the face of bull riders replace DJs’ faces.

Main Performance

Seven main events have historically taken place at the NFR. Each event has its own monetary prizes that are paid out, and those payouts are determined by each top-placing competitor’s rank in relation to the event’s overall prize pool. Individuals placed in the top-six of a particular event are paid out accordingly, while individuals placed in the top-eight of the overall NFR are also paid out. The NFR’s main events are as follows:
  • Bareback Riding
  • This consists of a horseback cowboy using a bareback rigging as the primary means of staying on top of the horse. This grip has often been compared to the equivalent of hanging on to a suitcase handle and makes for the only support that a cowboy has on top of the wildly bucking horse. An 8-second ride constitutes a qualified ride and the cowboys is judged on riding technique.
  • Steer Wrestling
  • This act involves a horseback steer wrestler, alternatively known as a “bulldogger”, bringing a fast-moving steer to a halt on its back as fast as possible. The bulldogger utilizes a combination of strength, technique, speed, and precision to jump off of their horse from a designated starting point and onto a steer sprinting off from the same starting point.
  • Team Roping
  • Headers
  • One of two horseback team members whose job is to successfully rope the head of the steer in one of three tries as fast as possible; around both horns, around one horn and the head, or around the neck.
  • Heelers
  • One of two horseback team members whose job is to successfully rope the hind legs of the steer as soon as the header has successfully done their part. To avoid a 5-second penalty for roping only one hind leg, the heeler must rope both hind legs.
  • Saddle Bron Riding
  • Similar to Bareback Riding, the goal of the horseback cowboy is to maintain their balance as much as possible for 8 seconds while the horse is bucking. In this event, however, the cowboy sits on a saddle while using one hand to hold on to a thick rein that’s attached to the horse’s halter.
  • Tie-Down Roping
  • This event centers around a cowboy on horseback attempting to restrain a calf by throwing a well-timed rope loop that’s attached to the cowboy’s horse. The cowboy and the calf both leave from a designated starting point, with the calf getting a slight head-start. The cowboy depends on the horse to mitigate any slack in the rope after dismounting, then proceeds to tie-up the calf as fast as possible.
  • Barrel Racing
  • This is a women’s event where horseback cowgirls race against the clock to complete a strategically set course where barrels are set up as landmarks. The intent is for the cowgirls to complete a cloverleaf-shaped run around 3 barrels placed in a triangular formation as fast as possible. Barrels that are accidentally knocked over result in 5-second penalties.
  • Bull Riding
  • The cowboy on top of the bull has the main objective of staying on top and maintaining their balance for 8 seconds. They are judged based on technique and can earn extra points by spurring while the bull is bucking. The cowboy stays on top of the bull by grasping a flat braided rope, which also wraps around the bull’s chest.
  • All-Around Champion
  • Being crowned the All-Around Champion speaks volumes about the versatility and high level of talent exhibited by the winning cowboy. In order to receive this honor, the cowboy must have won the most prize money in a given year and competed in at least 2 NFR events while earning at least $3,000 in each of those events. This is widely known as the highest honor bestowed by the PRCA.

Super Bowl of Rodeo

The NFR has consistently been referred to with this phrase because of the sheer massiveness of its popularity and money-generating power within the context of rodeo. The event is considered to be so big and consistently sold-out that the UNLV basketball team that normally uses the NFR’s venue during the season has to annually build its schedule in a way that keeps the team on the road for the duration of the NFR festivities.

Miss Rodeo America

This event is a pageant that takes place in conjunction with the NFR as part of the NFR’s overall festivities. State rodeo queen winners from across the United States compete for the Miss Rodeo America crown and put themselves in line to potentially win $20,000, among other smaller prizes. In addition to the prizes, the winner is expected to travel to various rodeos throughout the United States and to promote the rodeo during the subsequent year.

Wrangler NFR Preshow

The former Miss Rodeo America titleholder is no stranger to the excitement of the “Super Bowl” of Western competition, with six years of WNFR reporting under her belt. She is most excited about bringing the pre-show to the fans. Be prepared for this Wrangler NFR Preshow, don’t miss a single moment of the Pro Rodeo live action.

Cowboy Christmas

For those that need a break from the constant adrenaline that comes with the NFR’s main events, the Cowboy Christmas experience allows for a welcomed change of pace. This portion of NFR centers around cowboy shopping and serves as a marketplace for hundreds of exhibitors from the United States and Canada to sell to thousands of eager buyers. Typically taking place at the Las Vegas Convention Center, Cowboy Christmas will also move to Arlington, TX in 2020. All exhibitors will have the opportunity to Opt-In/Opt-Out for 2020.

Standings

The 2019 PRCA season has been extremely competitive as a lot of the top cowboys are gunning for glory. Tuf Cooper sits atop of the all-around standings and many experts believe that he is going to win his second all-around title in a row. There will be a lot of close competitions and many of the world championships could come down to the last day. You can check the current standings here.

NFR Prize Money

The total payout for the entire event is $10 million and will remain at that amount until 2020. After that, the amount will be adjusted and remain in place for the subsequent five years. All 120 qualifying contestants receive $10,000 as part of participating. This year’s detailed payout structure can be found on the PRCA’s 2019 Wrangler NFR Payoff page.

Final Words

All in all, the National Finals Rodeo is a landmark event and a de facto defining period of time within any given rodeo year. 2020.09.21 20:50 ButIAmYourDaughter St. Elmo’s Fire: More Gen X or Late Boomer?

So I’ve always found the timing of this movie’s making and release interesting.
Here you have one half of the “Brat Pack” playing post-college young adults trying their yuppie damndest to grow up.
But it’s released in the same year as The Breakfast Club, where the other half is playing high schoolers. And the trend of teen movies aimed at portraying core Gen X high schoolers wouldn’t really burn out until the late 80s.
I know this sub adheres to Strauss and Howe’s 1961 start date, but it’s more widely accepted that 1965 is the official start of Gen X. So by that criteria the characters in SEF are late Boomers, really classic Gen Joners actually.
Back in the mid 80s was this a big movie with Gen Xers? I know it was a major hit across multiple age groups, but was it seen as a movie about young Boomers, just the more youthful side of The Big Chill coin, or was this a movie that appealed to the same crowd who were pouring into theaters determined to make John Hughes a very wealthy man?

Arizona reached 400+ yards just once over the two seasons combined (2017-18) prior to Kingsbury’s arrival.
The 2020 season marks just the second time in franchise history (1976) that the Cardinals have posted 400+ net yards and 20+ first downs in each of the first two games of a season.
• Only five times in franchise history have the Cardinals had more net yards in the first two games of a season than they have in 2020. Arizona’s 842 yards are the most through two games since the team had 903 yards in 1984.

He was even better on Sunday vs. Washington, throwing for 286 yards and a TD while rushing for 67 yards and two TDs on just eight carries. He is the first Cardinals QB with a passing and rushing TD in consecutive games since Jim Hart accomplished the feat in 1969.

• Yesterday’s game marked Campbell’s seventh career outing with 10+ tackles, five of which have come in his last 15 games dating back to last season.

OTHER WEEK 2 NOTES

• LS Aaron Brewer – now in his ninth NFL season and playing in his 119th career game on Sunday – recovered the first fumble of his career in the first quarter. Covering a punt return, Brewer jumped on a ball forced loose by TE Darrell Daniels at the WAS 40-yard line. Six plays later QB Kyler Murray scored on a 14-yard TD run to give Arizona a 14-0 lead.
• Second-year WR Andy Isabella hauled in a 54-yard reception in the second quarter to help set up a Cardinals FG that gave Arizona a 17-0 lead. Of his 11 career receptions, three have covered at least 50 yards (54. 55 and 88).

Map: Malden

Briefing:

Situation

It is July 1965, America is focused on Vietnam, as is most of the world. In the East Atlantic the tiny island nation of Malden has sent a letter to the North Atlantic Treaty Organization asking for two things, membership in NATO and assisting in the elimination of a violent Communist led rebellion that has taken over half of the island. With this plea for help, America has asked other NATO countries for them to directly intervene as the Americans have a shared air force base with the Malden Air Force, and an army base on the south east island.
Canada has accepted to intervene and has sent a platoon from 2 Battalion PPCLI (Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry), a gun line from 1 RCHA (Royal Canadian Horse Artillery), a section of Medics from the Royal Canadian Medical Corps, and a helicopter crew from 444 Tactical Helicopter Squadron stationed in Lahr Germany.

Enemy Forces

From what intel we have gathered so far the Communist Militias have no armoured vehicles or aircraft, and limited access to anti-tank and anti-air weaponry. These are armed civilians, mostly identifiable by the black beret or balaclava that most of its members wear. They may have gained access to Soviet weapons, so be prepared for AKs.

Friendly Forces

Besides the company sized element of Americans between the two bases, you are the only NATO units on the ground. There are also friendly police and Nationalist Militia forces in some of the cities and towns. The Nationalist Militias do not wear balaclavas or black berets with read stars. Most wear bandannas to hide their identity in case the Rebels take over.

Civil/Terrain considerations

There may still be civilians in the area, either out in the open or behind closed doors. You will be entering areas currently contested by both the Nationalist and Communist Militias so watch your fire, RETURN FIRE only. With the Artillery on station, we have been allowed to fire on positions BELIEVED to contain enemy fighters without risk of reprisal. That does not mean level every structure.

Mission

Capture of the towns to the south west of the USAF Airbase, including the capitol in order to restore peace and order in this region.

Assets

You have access to TLAVs (M113 APCs), Trucks, Jeeps, Artillery, and a small number of Huey Helicopters.

Administration/Logistics

The Huey crew will be running reinsertion and resupply runs, as well as provide light air support (Door Guns) and recon from above.
For the Artillery crew, to avoid running out of ammo use the ammo trucks near your gun line to resupply the guns.
If you respawn or join late proceed to the warehouse next to the medical helipad and use the radio on the table to inform the pilots that you need a pickup, by interacting with it.

Due to the limits of technology only Command team, Section Leaders and Section 2iCs will have radios.

If you are missing kit:

There are 2 Limited Arsenal boxes near spawn. One is a large shipping box near the heli-pad, has everything except radios. The second is in the office of the white warehouse, has radios. Only use these if you are missing kit, as mentioned above only Command Roles will have Radios.

Slotting:

Make sure your slotting comment has these vital pieces of information:
in-game name, discord name, role
In an attempt to avoid half filled sections comment what role you wish and slots will be filled up from top to bottom. As always first come, first serve.
CO, squad leaders and special roles (all roles in bold letters) should join the teamspeak 30 minutes before the event starts for planning the mission.
If this is your first event with us we would also like to ask you to join 30 minutes early for a quick introduction to MC.
ROLES
FOO: The Forward Observation Officer is a member of 1RCHA attached to the platoon to call in artillery strikes from the four M119A2 howitzers. The FOO will pass this info onto the Artillery Officer by grid coordinates.
X-Ray: The Helicopter will serve as logistics, light air support via the door guns, and recon for the platoon.

Slots

When you sign up, ask for a role, not a slot. We will do this to fill up Alpha and Bravo first.
This list is not guaranteed to be up to date! Do a quick look through the comments to make sure your slot hasn't already been claimed.
You need to have played at least three events with us for all leadership and special roles like pilots or vehicle crew.

2020.09.19 11:54 pog99 Ryan Faulk distorts Segregation/Jim Crow.

See the original article and the garbage it inspired.
If you were to find the about page of his blog, you would know that he defends the blog from promoting white supremacy by simply reporting the facts. A strict reading could put together that it doesn't mean that one couldn't defend or rationalize past systems of white supremacy. I've recently revisited and clarified the issues of his Slave trade article, and soon I plan on talking about multiple issues with his slavery article as well, so today I will do the same with this one.
The running theme of the piece is that disparities during Jim Crow either couldn't be explained specifically by segregation, or that disparities came larger after the 1960s thus segregation as a factor is ruled out. The problems are that -
  1. For each aspect that he measures, he doesn't tie it to a specific expert claim on how Segregation played a role in the disparity.
  2. He doesn't account for post-1960s factors that causes the persisting or larger disparity, and assumes post-1960s is a systematically neutral control.
  3. For certain disparities he compares, they are inappropriate and are not indicative of what he purports.
And for the record, no, he doesn't actually talk about voting or juror restriction by race.
The article-
We first get a rationalization of his analysis.
When I was younger, I would read world atlases. And sometimes I would come to an article, say an article on the country Colombia, and it would say that Colombia is a world leader in coffee production, then list off some other “cash crops”. Then it would go into the growing textiles sector, and mention that it has some problem with debt. Maybe it’s a leading producer of phosphates as well or something. And if you read all of this qualitative, subjective description, you would never realize that Colombia was poor. It’s not until you got to “per capita GDP” that you would discover that it was $3,000 per capita.
You could also have someone qualitatively describe a football game between Auburn and Alabama. And they could do highlights, and describe some of the big plays, and you wouldn’t know that Alabama completely steamrolled Auburn until you looked at the box score.
Or imagine if your son was “describing” qualitatively and subjectively how he was doing in his classes. As a parent you don’t care, you want to see the damn grades.
And so the effects of segregation on blacks. What does the data say? Because in school when segregation is taught, it’s the equivalent of describing a football game by just looking at the highlights and not the box score. It’s cat-lady storytime.
Well, there are a few big go-to topics that popped into my mind to try to quantify the effects of segregation on blacks: cops and courts, schools, income and lynching. So that’s what I go-to’d.

1. Incarceration rate
The incarceration rate for blacks relative to whites has increased at least since 1930, probably long before that. So in terms of blacks being targeted for being sent to prison, it looks like they were substantially less targeted compared to today.
So if the legal systems were unfair during segregation, they appear to be even more unfair today. Or perhaps they weren’t unfair during segregation, are unfair today, or perhaps the laws are different today in a way that disparately impacts blacks more than they did in the past.
There are all sorts of things we can speculate, but it’s not immediately or obviously apparent, from the data, that the legal system was particularly keen on incarcerating blacks compared to today.
So for those of you more keen on race and mass incarceration, you would know that this is particularly strong in Northern Urban regions rather than the South. A whole demographic transition occurred that accounted for it.
Not to mention he never actually looked for studies that purport to address biases during Jim Crow. What does he find through is roundabout ways?
2. Prison sentences
For prison sentences, the numbers have been remarkably stable. When you look at length of prison terms for blacks compared to whites after the FIRST release from prison, it’s very close.
The first release data is important because none of these are repeat offenders. Repeat offenders get more time, and blacks are more likely to be repeat offenders.
That said, based on the data below, blacks serve roughly ~15% longer prison terms for their first term. It could be because the crimes blacks commit within each category are, on average, more severe. It could be racial bias on the part of judges.
Or it could be that blacks have worse courtroom behavior, as when IQ is controlled for, the racial gap in prison sentences goes away.
But what you don’t see is blacks having longer prison sentences during segregation.
Black Multiple of White Median Time Served For ALL Releases in State and Federal Prisons
Now what if we looked at median prison time served just in the South, and back in 1937 – smack in the middle of “Jim Crow” – and included repeat offenders, of which black inmates are a higher proportion today? The result is not that much different from the entire US today:
Black Multiple of White Median Time Served For ALL Releases in 14 Southern States in State and Federal Prisons
Remember, the 1937 data is JUST from the South, supposedly the hot seat of bigotry, and includes repeat offenders.
Homicide data is an unweighted average of each category. In 1937 and 1952 they used Murder and Manslaughter, in 1964 they just had Homicide, and in 2009 they had Murder, Negligent Manslaughter and Non-Negligent Manslaughter.
In case you think I am cherry-picking the years to paint a particular narrative, these are literally just the years used in the Bureau of Justice report I am citing.
And so what we can see is that the black-white incarceration gap is wider today than it was in 1930. In addition, the racial gap in sentence length for first offenders does not appear to have changed at all. Even the data that INCLUDED repeat offenders just in the South in 1937 doesn’t differ that much from the first-time offender data nationally and later.
And so this makes the idea that the current US legal system was more biased against blacks during segregation than it is today SEEM false.
So this is a good example of a data point that doesn't correspond to a specific Civil Rights claim for Jim Crow relative to the post-1960s. Mass incarceration is usually shown as being a post 1960s phenomenon of bias as a particular, in connection to Blacks increasing presence in the North. His source supports it. On page 88.
The median time served for the total was 17 days. For blacks the median was 2 days longer, 19 days. Interestingly, there were larger differences between whites and blacks in time served in the North than in the South. The median time served in the North for whites was 18 days and for blacks a full week longer, 25 days. In the South the median was 17 days for blacks and 16 days for whites. Looking at time served by offense, these differences continue.
Typical civil rights claims are in regard the lack of Black Jurors deals with not simply length of prison time but biases towards choosing conviction by a white jury relative to a comparable white defendant, which this doesn't study.
Therefore, the proper way how to study this would be conviction rates in the same region overtime, such as the South, and compared between different types of juries and defendants. I lack data on this, but one form of bias I have found was application of the death Penalty for rape in the South from the 1930s to the 1960s was harsher not just for Black Criminals, but for Black criminals accused ofraping whites. In further detail, 13% of Black rapists in 11 southern states received the death penalty compared to 2% of whites.
Decreases in overall non-white (likely black) executions, by his source, decreased sharply after the 1960s. Overtime, rates of executions decreased even though crime increased into this period. Mind you, there were death penalty changes around this time.
This source, btw, contains a variety of measurements by race during Jim Crow into the present that could suggest bias outside of merely prison sentences.

3. Lynching
A related topic to this is lynching. From Richard M. Perloff, Professor of Communication at Cleveland State University:
“Approximately 4,742 individuals were lynched between 1882 and 1968; of the victims, 3,445 or 73 percent were Black.”
All lynchings were in response to a claimed offense, such as a rape or stealing cattle. Blacks were 72.65% of all recorded lynchings while being ~26.87% of the population of the South at the time.
The Black population of the Southern US 1880-1970 averages 26.87% at each decade. And so based on their population alone, if lynchings were race-neutral, and we knew nothing about race differences in violent crime going in, we would expect 26.87% of all lynchings to be of blacks. Blacks comprised 72.65% of all lynchings, giving them a representation 2.70 times their population.
However, according to wikipedia, most lynchings occurred between 1882 and 1920, and during that time period the average black population was 31.76% of the southern US population. Using this number, blacks as a percentage of lynchings are only 2.29 times their percentage of the population.
If we split the difference and just say that the black population of the south was 29.32% of the total population, then blacks as a percentage of lynchings was 2.48 times their percentage of the population.
By comparison, in 2010, blacks comprised 12.6% of the total US population, but were 38.13% of the population charged for violent crimes, giving them a representation 3.03 times their population.
And so by raw numbers the lynch mobs appear to be slightly less racially targeting than the current US legal system is. Here are those numbers put in a table:
So when I first read this I thought he was comparing lynchings to police shootings. The second time shows me how asinine he is. This is a good example of an inappropriate comparison.
Being charged with a crime isn't the same as a lynching, lynchings are categorized by the source he originally used for sentencing as an execution, one of the trends that decreased in rates for blacks and as established was higher in the South in ways suggestive of bias.
From his source-
Almost three-fourths (73 percent) of those lynched between 1890 and 1962 (the date of the last recorded lynching) were black, and in the same period, 54 percent of those executed were nonwhite. About 90 percent of those dying under State authority were executed for homicide. Only 41 percent of illegal lynchings were for homicide (Tables 2-1 and 2-2).
This is more or less consistent with my studies showing that, in the South, rape (the next largest portion of lynching offenses After Homicide) was disproportionately applied to black men with death.
Lynchings, as well decreased in accordance with campaigning against it as established in my Dwight Murphey post. This would be an example of civil rights interacting with oppression.

4. Income
This is where arguments regarding the negative effects of segregation start to have some backing in data. Looking at census data from 1948, we can see that black income as a proportion of white income went from around 44% in 1948 to about 80% in 2000. This looks like a massive effect from desegregation on it’s face:
📷
However, there is some interesting data from 1880. If you just look within regions, the racial gap is much less. At that time, black workers earned on median 37% of what white workers earned. However, if you just looked at the south, blacks earned 58% of what white workers earned. So just with that regional control we’re already almost half way to the current black-white income ratio.
Population and wage income by race and region in 1880
But the paper did something else – it looked at black labor income relative to whites, but just looked a rural southern whites and blacks, and only looked at labor income. And in that instance, black income was 89% of white income:
📷
And so when you look at the same region, and the same kind of work, and just compare the wages of workers, the black-white income gap in the rural South was only 11%, lower than it is today. And that difference could very plausibly be due to blacks having fewer skills on average in 1880.
I would be interested to see similar thin slices just looking at urban blacks in the south vs. urban whites in the south, and urban blacks in the north to urban whites in the north. I suspect that the more you held constant region and urban/rural divide, the smaller the racial gap would be.
Which is to say, that it seems like much of the black-white income gap could have been a function of blacks living in rural areas (which were poorer back then) and living in the south (which was poorer back then).
In addition, we can see that the narrowing of the black-white income gap roughly corresponds with blacks moving out of the south. This is not a 1:1 correlation, but it is does suggest that simply moving out of the south), which began in earnest around 1910, is part of the explanation for the narrowing of the black-white income gap:
📷
And in the north, where more of the blacks were slaves who had earned their freedom before 1865, black wages as a proportion of white wages were higher. In fact blacks in the north were wealthier than whites in the south for quite some time.
Moreover, the narrowing of the black-white income gap at the national level occurred almost entirely during segregation. So to say that the smaller amount of narrowing that occurred following desegregation was in fact a result of desegregation is something that sounds kinda plausible – there’s certainly a little story you can tell – but there’s very little data for it. The most you could say is that there was a brief acceleration of the narrowing of the black-white income gap immediately after 1965, but that could be a coincidence, and even if you want to say it was a result of the civil rights act, then the acceleration versus a continuation of the previous trend is still only going to be like 2%.
Now as for why the black-white income gap narrowed from 1948 (at least) to 2000, that’s another topic. I suspect much of it has to do with the economic rise of the south and the migration of blacks away from the rural economy. Also this higher income may not have corresponded with a rise in living standards relative to whites since the cost of living may have increased, but that’s more speculative. But desegregation doesn’t appear to have any relevance to it.
So even the narrowing of the black-white income gap, long touted as prime evidence that segregation was previously suppressing black wages, the evidence is not so clear on that.
So, he decreased the gap however in a way that was not applied to the modern gap, therefore makes his comparison null.
He spends most of this section explaining factors pertaining to geography and the like explaining the gap, even though it's existence is tied to both slavery and the economic and educational limitations of the South for Blacks. This can be seen in the lack of second generation benefits of white migrants relative to black migrants, those born in the North being positively selected for those returning to the South, and the steeper reduction in poverty among southern Blacks due to migrants that returned to the South.
Likewise, despite his claims that Northern Blacks being richer than Southern Whites, he doesn't produce a chart or study showing that.
5. Wealth and Employment
Two more things to consider is that up until the 1950’s blacks had employment rates similar to that of whites. And the unemployment rate in blacks grew much more after 1965:
📷
And in terms of wealth, black wealth as a proportion of white wealth has remained stagnant since 1963:
Moreover, I would say that the absolute disparity is more important than the black-white ratio. Because lets say you have $10 and Bob has $100. That’s a $90 gap. Depending on your job, that’s a day’s wage, or half a day’s wage. Now if you have $100 and Bob has $900, now you’re looking at multiple days’ wage. And so on and so on. So even though the relation is the same, the practical importance of the gap is growing. Also just the total dollar amount difference is increasing. And these are all in “2013 dollars”, which adjusts for inflation.
And so when people say that the relative economic situation of blacks has improved relative to whites since segregation, they’re looking at one thing: nominal income at the national level. They’re not looking at employment, at wealth, or how much, if at all, the income gap has narrowed when controlling for what region of the country we’re looking at, or if it’s urban or rural.
While this is worth pointing out, it fails to account for complex factors of the great migration. While gains were present, unemployment increased due to urban living and relatively higher demands in skill compared to the South. This can be seen by actually referencing the study he pulls the chart from, where changes in unemployment occur earlier and become starker outside of the South.
What is also interesting his how an earlier study done by one of the researchers of the 1999 study he cites notes how human capital can't explain as much of the gap in the North as it can in the South.
6. Schools
Another argument that segregation depressed black economic success is their lower school funding. On average, from 1890 to 1950, the average of how much each state spent on black schools as a proportion of what they spent on white schools was 56.96%. So they had less funding.
But funding for what? For “better teachers”? What’s a “better teacher”? What has been found in the US is that increased real spending on schools has not increased overall performance since the 1970s, and more importantly voucher studies have shown that the school an individual goes to has no real impact on either GPA, standardized test scores or future college attendance.
So the fact that additional funding didn’t matter in 1970 is one thing. But did it matter from 1870 to 1954?
Well, we don’t have regular standardized tests from that time period, but we do have a nationally representative IQ test done in 1917 for all US army conscripts for World War 1. In it blacks scored a median of 83 compared to the white score that was set to 100. Today the black median is still at 85. Okay, two points. And my guess is they were hollow for “g” anyway.
Certainly there were journalists at the time who did “investigative journalism” and wrote anecdotal reports of how bad the black schools were. Michael Moore does “investigative journalism” today too about how great the Cuban healthcare system is. Walter Duranty visited the USSR in the 1930s and came back writing glowing reviews of the benevolent, if firm, policies of Stalin.
Maybe they were telling the truth, maybe they were making things up, who knows.
Black schools were probably worse But the question is how much worse really? And for most people, did it even matter? Most of what people learn in school they forget anyway, so aside from literacy and basic math, the practical importance of school would be minimal for most people at that time.
And the culture of school credentials as a signal to employers hadn’t developed yet, so at the time any “educational disadvantages” blacks had, whatever they were and if any, would not matter in terms of credential-signaling because that hadn’t developed yet, and in terms of knowledge beyond basic literacy and math – that all gets forgotten anyway.
So....lets review.
  1. He could've mentioned the Coleman Report but didn't. This is a pretty major study in this particular field of social science, so for Faulk to miss something crucial to grounding his point only demonstrates his lack of familiarity with the material.
  2. I'm going to to assume, since the link is dead, that the studies referenced in that link doesn't account for how money is spent.
  3. His study cites work from a cosumer behavior course, not actual studies on schools.
  4. A recent study shows that for Jim Crow, school quality accounts for the majority of the wage gap for the era.
  5. Actual tracking of changes in school quality supports the conclusion.
  6. Previous data given regarding the Great Migration would indicate that education and a market to use it made generational different for blacks, even considering selection.
7. Countrymen?
This section is a bit of a digression. In a broader sense, blacks weren’t seen as legitimate countrymen to some extent for some time in the region. And so since the blacks were viewed as “foreigners” to southern whites, who to some extent viewed northern whites as foreigners as well, they didn’t think they owed the blacks equal school funding any more than they owed people from Peru or Romania or China equal school funding.
I.e. the black-white gap in school funding meant as much to them as the american-chinese gap in school funding, as both the Chinese and the blacks were foreign to the southern whites.
Now you can have whatever opinion you want about it, and say that blacks were rightful countrymen of southern whites, and really pound your fists in self-righteous certainty about it because you “know it to be true”. That’s certainly your viewpoint.
But understand that it is just your viewpoint, and when you realize that the southern whites viewed blacks the way we look at illegal immigrants today, and that the times during which either repatriation of blacks to Africa or creating a separate black country out of land in the US were serious proposals were still in living memory at the time.
Today blacks have been part of the US for so long that such proposals probably seem bizarre to you. And they would bizarre and cruel if implemented today. But also remember that the US had to impose military governments in the south in order to pass the 14th amendment that gave the blacks citizenship. And Oregon, New Jersey and Ohio renounced their ratification of the 14th amendment after the fact in protest of this action.
Obviously is was a symbolic gesture, but it showed that opposition to the way the 14th amendment was passed wasn’t considered some kooky fringe idea at the time. Of course it is now because if you bring up the use of military governments in passing the 14th amendment – well, “only racists talk about that”, so it just gets dismissed.
But yes, understand that the 14th amendment was seen like granting “amnesty” to the illegals is today – it would be creating an alternative method of granting citizenship for a specific group of non-citizens in the US today.
(And the fact that more whites supported granting citizenship to the black slaves at the time than supporting granting amnesty to illegals today is support for a theory I have about whites in the past being more “neurologically left-wing” even if they would be considered today to hold “far-right” positions by today’s standards.)
  1. Despite whatever perceptions American whites had about Americans blacks, it doesn't change the facts were that blacks were not comparable to the Chinese at the time. The cultural gaps and their economic history on a racial basis doesn't justify it.
  2. The basis of historical relativism in this case was seeming argued further in his MLK video, now deleted. That is, as argued by others before, whites didn't have to pay taxes for Black schools. This causes obvious problems as the average black had only limited wealth to tax in large part due to limited skills.
Faulk's self prophesied Conclusion-
So, what do we learn from his conclusions? He bizarrely begins with a tangent on the Zimmerman and Wilson trials and the correlated of media knowledge.
Some excerpts.
The jurors certainly knew more facts about each case than the general public did. Moreover, whites are more likely to believe Zimmerman and Wilson were justified, and whites do better on tests of current events knowledge. In addition, males, who do better on current events knowledge tests than females, also were more satisfied with the Zimmerman verdict than women, and women do worse on current events knowledge tests. Also, people with higher education levels approved the verdict as well.
Thus, all three factors that correlate with general political and current events knowledge (being white, being male and having lots of time in school) also correlate with approving the Zimmerman trial verdict. And the people who had the MOST knowledge – the jurors – unanimously found Zimmerman not guilty.
If you go by the literature in news media talking about “institutional racism” and “white privilege”, it’s not immediately obvious that the aggregate of all media is any less obsessed with the plight of the coloreds than they were in 1964. Maybe they were, but I have no way to really tell.
Do you see it? Do you see that lack of any real transition? Maybe some further comment can help.
But lets say Derrick Wilson killed “the gentle giant” in 1961. There was no internet in 1961, what you knew about the events was what a few major news outlets chose to report. As it happens, a jury also found J.W. Milam and Roy Bryant not guilty of murder in their killing of Emmett Till. And what do you know about that event? Do the facts you know of the Emmett Till verdict seem to paint a one-sided story to where it is unbelievable, yes, unbelievable that a jury would find Bryant and Milam not guilty?
Once again we have a comparison that isn't proper. The modern day examples leaves no ambiguity as to who killed who, it was a matter of whether the killing was justified or not.
The Emmett Till situation was vastly different, since the matter of whether or not Till was killed, whether or not Milam and Bryant were guilty, or exactly what happened between Till and Bryant in the store. Her own account only goes as far as to say that she was grabbed by the waist, while press releases by the defense/police was explicitly more violent. Both stories differ from her original account to her lawyers. Even the officer who initially believed that the body belonged to Till changed his mind when the town's reputation began to be tarnished.
Furthermore, even if we are to treat the Till case like the modern day examples, it only shows the hairiness of the case itself. Despite the defense being that Till is not confirmed dead, and that the brothers were innocent of murder, part of their defense regarding Till's actions and the release of Louis Till's rape record by politicians shows a blatant message. That even if the brothers killed Till, it was justified despite nonetheless being illegal.
Anyone, however, can read the various sources that talks about the issue at length. Personally I have Devery Anderson's most recent book.
Because we all know that the courts in the South were incredibly unfair to the blacks? Except there’s no real data to support that at the time,
In regards to death penalties, legal and illegal, for interracial rape, we do. This is supported, along with the data, In regards to changing testimonies in the case of Till, from the police, we do. From the fact that shortly afterward another white on black murder with a white witness (and multiple black ones) claiming otherwise. Said white was not only a friend of the defendants of the Till case, but was defended by the same officer who doubted the corpse's identity.
Point is that an entire survey of the south as a premise of bias is unnecessary (though supportive) of bias. The specific town where the crime took place has plenty of evidence of bias during the trial stemming from community values.
and victim surveys from modern times correspond with the police arrest rates, and police are more likely to kill a white person in any given arrest situation, are more likely to shoot blacks in simulations, and the black percentage of killing cops is higher than their percentage of being killed by cops. And in fact the black incarceration rate relative to whites is HIGHER than it was during segregation.
Irrelevant to the context of Till, a circumstance so legally unique from the above examples it shows Faulk's ignorance. The only connection is the matter of white credibility in modern settings verses in the context of a particular case.
As shown in previous articles, modern “institutional racism” in terms of police and court bias, callbacksand educational opportunities are very easily revealed to be phantasms – or at the very least the issue of whether or not they exist is much more complex than the basic statistics you hear on tumblr and huffpo posts would suggest.
Both articles are shitty, see United Left on the school vouchers argument.
Recent studies have shown that residential racial segregation has increased in the United States. This is an improvement over older studies which simply looked at cities and the percentage of each race in the cities. These newer methods actually look at the likelihood of you having a neighbor of a different race, and find that racial segregation is increasing.
So it's basically comparing two different types of "segregation", the conventional method comparing pre-1960s trends nonetheless decreasing.
We already know that schools are more segregated than they were during the late 1960s. Now this is a profound thing; you’ve been to school. You had first hand experience with how racially segregated they were. THAT was close to what it was like during Jim Crow that we hear so many stories about. So… how segregated did it seem?
Again, misleading headline.
In other places on this site, Sean and I make arguments about how currently, blacks and hispanics are not getting a raw deal in employment, courts or education. But what surprised me was just how much, looking into the past, the old days seem so similar to today in terms of the lot of blacks compared to whites.
They are drawn parallel. The past is not far away, it’s right here. 60 years ago was yesterday.
Only your superficial understanding of the 1960s, or any decade before.

An excerpt from CIC agent Robert Clayton Mudd's January 30th 1947 report on Jesuit trained dictator Ante Pavelic fleeing Croatia via a Vatican ratline.
The Vatican Ratline being exposed here in 1947.

From the US Army file on Ante Pavelic: Special Agent Robert Clayton Mudd gives an extensive outline of Pavelic's career to date. Paragraph Five is a bombshell: the first glimpse of what would eventually be revealed as the Vatican Ratline, designed to shield Nazi fugitives from arrest and shepherding them to safe locations in countries outside of Europe.
HEADQUARTERS COUNTER INTELLIGENCE CORPS ALLIED FORCES HEADQUARTERS APO 512
January 30 1947
SUMMARY OF INFORMATION SUBJECT: Present Whereabouts and Past Background of Ante PAVELIC, Croat Quisling
  1. From a usually reliable source the following information has been obtained concerning the present whereabouts of Ante PAVELIC,Croat Quisling.
  2. With the collapse of German resistance in the Balkans and the subsequent withdrawal of support of the puppet Croat government on the part of the Germans, Ante PAVELIC, fearing for his personal safety at the hands of the Partisans fled from Jugoslavia into Austria where he took refuge in the small village of CELOVAC near the Austrian-Jugoslav frontier. Pavelic had an apartment and a villa there.
  3. In April of 1946 PAVELIC left Austria and came to ROME accompanied only by an Ustasa Lieutenant named DOCHSEN. Both were dressed as Roman Catholic priests. They took refuge in a college there in Via Giavomo Belli, 3, which is the only college in ROME enjoying complete extra-territoriality, and which can be entered only by presenting the proper credentials. (Presumably the Papal seal is needed because it is said that this is the only college in ROME directly under the administration of the Pope.)
  4. This informant further states that a short time ago PAVELIC obtained at the Spanish Consulate in MILANO a passport under the name of DON PEDRO GONNER. This passport is ready for Spain and has a visa either for South America or Canada. Three other members of the Ustashi are being taken care of in this same fashion but the only one so far identified is General Vlado KREN, Chief of the Croat Air Force under PAVELIC. KREN is an old-time Yugoslav officer who at the outset of the war deserted to the Germans taking with him as much loot and money as he could. He was decorated by the Germans after a lengthy inspection tour of the Croat Air Force on the Eastern Front.
  5. This informant, directed by this Agent to try to penetrate the Ustashi intelligence network in Italy and Jugoslavia, has managed to do so and it has been determined that the network runs from GRUMO-ROME-VENICE-TRIESTE-LJUBLJANA-ZAGREB. The whole affair is run under cover of the Roman Catholic clergy whose priests in these monasteries are nearly all of Croat extraction. Complete penetration of this organization is a rather lengthy process but efforts are being continued in that direction. There is no doubt that Ustashi elements in Italy communicate with one another, and that the focal point of all intelligence and activity is the Monastery of Saint Jerome , Via Tomacelli, 132,ROME.
BACKGROUND:
  1. Ante PAVELIC was born in 1896 in Ivan Planina in Bosnia and practiced law in ZAGREB. An extremist even in his youth he became a member of the arch-terrorist organization known as the"Frankovci" whose founder, Dr. Josip FRANK, was a Jew and the father-in-law of Slavko KVATERNIK, the first Croat to be elevated to the rank of Field Marshall. KVATERNIK had long been a strong advocate of Croat separatism and the German ideas on a separate Croat state found in him a reday tool.
  2. The quarrelsome nature of PAVELIC became more and more apparent in the years immediately after the first war when he became involved in one dispute after another with the Centralist Party and the Croat Peasant Party of RADIC. He was the sole representative of his Party in the Skupstina (Jugoslav Parliament)but rarely attended sessions and when he did he sulked in his seat and only occasionally indulged in a long harangue in protest against some measure which he did not approve.
  3. In the early 1920's, PAVELIC began to establish his contacts with Croat emigrees in VIENNA and BUDAPEST and later on he established a close accord with the Macedonian terrorist society,IMRO. In 1927 he acted as counsel for the defense of the Macedonian terrorists at the SKOPLJE trials.
  4. Shortly after the proclamation of the establishment of the dictatorship of King ALEKSANDAR in January 1929, PAVELIC fled abroad and was subsequently condemned to death in absentia at BELGRADE for his part in anti-Serb demonstrations organized at SOFIA by Bulgarian and Macedonian terrorists.
  5. From 1930 onwards while living abroad, a great part of the time in Italy, he became the leader of a terrorist organization eventually to be known as the Ustasha. This organization was financed by ROME and BUDAPEST and given moral encouragement by the Germans. Together with JELIC, ARTUKOVIC , and the younger KVATERNIK and others he was responsible for a serious flurry of bomb outrages, the weapons and explosives all supplied by Italy. This occurred in the period between 1930 and 1935.
  6. Camps for training terrorists and saboteurs were set up in Italy and Hungary, chiefly at BRESCIA and BORGOTARO in Italy and JANKA PUSZTA in Hungary and an armed insurrection was attempted in 1933 when the Ustashi, armed by the Italians, attempted to invade the country by crossing the Adriatic in motorboats. This was unsuccessful but its lack of success probably was instrumental in the decision to assassinate King ALEKSANDAR. Two attempts were made, the last one successful and ALEKSANDAR was slain at MARSEILLES 14 October, 1943 along with the French Minister of the Interior, Jean BARTHOU. The singular lack of armed protection afforded by the Jugoslav monarch, and the general laxity of security precautions when it was well-known that one attempt had already been made on ALEKSANDAR'S life are rather ghastly tributes to the organizational ability of PAVELIC, who apparently had been able to bribe some high official in the Surete General. The Prefect of Police of MARSEILLES, JOUHANNAUD, was subsequently removed from office.
  7. Yugoslavia took her case to the League of Nations offering evidence that Italy and Hungary had openly conspired against her sovereignty. However, for some strange reason Italy's role in the affair was never considered and Hungary bore the brunt of the charges. Italy, furthermore, stubbornly refused to extradite PAVELIC who, along with the younger KVATERNIK, was placed under the permanent supervision of the Italian police until sometime in 1941.During the course of his "house arrest" he was subsidized by the Italians and he conferred long and often with Count Galeazzo CIANO on the prospective coup d'etat in Croatia.
  8. In April of 1941 he arrived in ZAGREB and proclaimed the"Free and Independent State of Croatia" with himself as the head of the government. What prompted the Axis powers to put a man like PAVELIC at the head of a puppet government is not too well-known for it was an established fact that he was an ardent extremist of the worse sort and an international gangster. Perhaps it was the fact that the Nazis and Fascists were not looking for leadership. The only thing that they needed was a fanatic, an ultra-chauvinist, who could and would do what they suggested and do it with a vengeance. At any rate in June and July, 1941 PAVELIC and his Croatian nationalists, representing the lunatic fringe of Balkan life, slaughtered in a few weeks tens of thousands of Serbians living in his "independent state" and along its peripheries.
  9. PAVELIC remained as head of the "Free and Independent State of Croatia" until early 1945 when he disappeared from the limelight and little trace of him has been found since.
  10. PAVELIC'S name tops the list of quislings whom the State Department and the Foreign Office have agreed to hand over to the Yugoslavs for trial. At the present time this Agent is expending every effort to try to trace PAVELIC AND HIS WIFE. One source yet unconfirmed states that she is living in VENICE under an assumed name while yet another says that she is living somewhere in ROME.
AGENTS COMMENTS AND RECOMMENDATIONS: IN view of the fact that this man, while generally considered a criminal, is not a criminal in just the ordinary sense but a political criminal as well, and in view of the fact that the Yugoslav Government through its controlled press has on several occasions accused the Anglo-Americans of hiding PAVELIC to further their own aims, this Agent recommends that every effort should be made to apprehend him and ship him back to the Jugoslav Government for trial. In so doing not only would the Yugoslav propaganda guns be silenced and the people of Jugoslavia forced to admit that their previous propaganda was all false, but also a serious threat to security would be removed and the position of the Anglo-Americans strengthened with regard to those south Slav elements who were pro-Allied before the war. The Ustashi organization in Italy is at the present moment a tightly-knit group still maintaining its "cell" organization, still publishing its papers, and still interested in the same aims that they professed before and during the war. The center of this organization is the Monastery of St. Jerome, Via Tomacelli, 132, ROME.

This is a follow-up report to Counter-Intelligence Corps Agent Robert Clayton Mudd's earlier report in which he indicated that the Monastery of San Girolamo was acting as a haven for Ustashi fugitives, and that he had run an agent into the network smuggling accused Ustashi war criminals out of Croatia. Mudd appeared earlier to be suspicious that Ustashi agents had infiltrated legitimate networks to help refugees, rather than that these networks themselves had been set up in order to smuggle out hunted Ustashi officials. His conclusions in Paragraph 15 remain unchallenged to this day. HEADQUARTERS COUNTER INTELLIGENCE CORPS ALLIED FORCES HEADQUARTERS APO 512
February 12, 1947
SUMMARY OF INFORMATION SUBJECT: Father Krunoslav DRAGANOVIC,RE: PAST Background and PRESENT Activity.
  1. Fr. Krunoslav DRAGANOVIC is a Croatian Catholic priest in the Monastery of San Geronimo, 132 Via Tomacelli. ROME. This man has for some time now been associated with Ustashi elements in Italy and, while in many instances it is hard to distinguish the activity of the Church from the activity of one man whose personal convictions might lie along a certain line, it is fairly evident in the case of Fr. DRAGANOVIC that his sponsorship of the Ustashi cause stems from a deep-rooted conviction that the ideas espoused by this arch-nationalist organization, half logical, half lunatic, are basically sound concepts.
  2. Fr. DRAGANOVIC is a native of TRAVNIK where he finished his elementary and secondary school. Shortly after this he went to SARAJEVO to study theology and philosophy. Here he fell under the personal magnetism of Dr. Ivan SARIC,archbishop of SARAJEVO, whose particular interest he soon became and after graduation he was sent to ROME under the auspices of Dr. SARIC who had some good connections in the Vatican.
  3. Having completed his studies at ROME where he majored in ethnology and Balkan affairs he returned to SARAJEVO where he held various political offices, all of a minor importance.Shortly after the formation of the Independent State of Croatia under Ante PAVELIC in April 1941 DRAGANOVIC became one of the leading figures in the Bureau of Colonization. In the middle of 1943 however he became involved in a disagreement over the relative merits of the younger Eugen KVATERNIK, whom he called a "madman and a lunatic", and he left Croatia and returned to ROME.
  4. According to a reliable informant it is believed that this departure of DRAGANOVIC from Croatia to Italy is a classic example of "kicking a man upstairs" inasmuch as it is fairly well established that the leaders of the Independent State of Croatia expected the prelate, through his good connections in the Vatican, to be instrumental in working out the orientation of Croatia towards the West rather than the East. These same leaders, being occidental-minded and knowing full well that Croatia's militant Catholocism made her a"natural" in such a deal, relied on DRAGANOVIC to assist in their aims. He was eminently unsuccessful.
  5. DRAGANOVIC has a brother still in ZAGREB who is a member of the Napredak Co., who recently was ignored in the elections to determine the members of the Board of Directors. He has another brother, whereabouts unknown, who was a member of the Croatian Embassy in BERLIN. He is in touch with his brother, ZVONKO, in ZAGREB but not with KRESO, whose whereabouts are not definetly known although he has been reported in the British zone in Germany.
  6. About a year ago DRAGANOVIC is alleged in some circles to have somewhat denounced his now ardent pro-Ustashi sentiments during a conference of Croats in ROME. Having been accused by a certain Dr. KLJAKOVIC (apparently a member of the Croat Peasant Party) of being in very close contact with only Ustashi emogrees DRAGANOVIC is said to have replied that if working for an independent Croatia meant being an Ustasha then "I am an Ustasha". "However," he added, "I disassociate myself from all other attributes of the Ustashi."
  7. With this aim in view DRAGANOVIC is working with the Ustashi and also with some leftovers of the Croat Peasant Party in exile. When Milan PRIBANIC, erstwhile Commandant of the Guard of Vlado MACEK, appeared in ROME, he immediately contacted him and thus made his aims and purposes clear to MACEK.
  8. Many of the more prominent Ustashi war criminals and Quislings are living in ROME illegally, many of them under false names. Their cells are still maintained, their papers still published, and their intelligence agencies still in operation. All this activity seems to stem from the Vatican, through the Monastary of San Geronimo to Fermo, the chief Croat Camp in Italy. Chief among the intelligence operatives in the Monastery of San Geronimo appear to be Dr. DRAGANOVIC and Monsignor MADJARAC.
  9. The main messenger between the Vatican, the Monastary and Fermo is an Ustasha student by the name of BRISKI. BRISKI was interned in the 209 POW Camp at AFRAGOLA and was with the Ustashi Cabinet members when their escape was organized from there. His physical description is as follows: 25 years old, medium height, black hair, seen mostly without a hat. Has very bad teeth in upper and lower jaw. Appears to be very wise.
  10. This Agent managed to run a counter-operative into this Monastary to find out if possible if the internal setup of the place was as had been alleged, namely that it was honeycombed with cells of Ustashi operatives. This was established and several things more but operations were stopped abruptly when it became too dangerous for the counter-intelligence agent in the Monastary. The following facts were ascertained:
  11. In order to enter this Monastary one must submit to a personal search for weapons and identification documents, must answer questions as to where he is from, who he is, whom he knows, what is purpose is in the visit, and how he heard about the fact that there were Croats in the Monastary. All doors from one room to another are locked and those that are not have an armed guard in front of them and a pass-word is necessary to go from one room to another. The whole area is guarded by armed Ustashi youths in civilian clothes and the Ustashi salute is exchanged continually.
  12. It was further established that the following prominent ex-Ustashi Ministers are either living in the monastery, or living in the Vatican and attending meetings several times a week at San Girolamo: Ivan DEVCIC, Lt. Colonel VRANCIC, Dr. Vjekoslav, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs. TOTH, Dr. Dragutin, Minister of Croat State Treasury. SUSIC, Lovro, Minister of Corporations in Croatian Quisling Government STARCEVIC, Dr. Mile, Croat Minister of Education. RUPCIC, General Dragutin, General of Ustashi Air Force. PERIC, Djordje, Serbian Minster of Propaganda under NEDIC. PECNIKAR, Vilko - Ustasha General and CO of Ustashi Gendarmerie MARKOVIC, Josip, Minister of Transport in Pavelic Government. KREN, Vladimir - Commander-in-Chief of the Croat AirForce.

  1. While this "Croat", directed by this Agent to try to penetrate the Croat intelligence network, was inside the Monastary he personally heard a conversation ensue between this Monsignor MADJERAC and Dr. SUSIC, who, at the time of the conversation, was in the Vatican library. He also heard a conversation between two of the Ustashi in the monastary which established the fact that a brother of Dr. PERIC runs a hotel in ROME, and that often this hotel is visited at night for the purpose of holding important Ustahi conferences. The money for the purchase of the hotel was given this man by his brother, Dr. PERIC.
  2. It was further established that these Croats travel back and forth from the Vatican several times a week in a car with a chauffeur whose license plate bears the two initials CD,"Corpo Diplomatico". It issues forth from the Vatican and discharges its passengers inside the Monastary of San Geronimo. Subject to diplomatic immunity it is impossible to stop the car and discover who are its passengers.
  3. DRAGANOVIC's sponsorship of these Croat Qusilings definitely links him up with the plan of the Vatican to shield these ex-Ustashi nationalists until such time as they are able to procure for them the proper documents to enable them to go to South America. The Vatican, undoubtedly banking on the strong anti-Communist feelings of these men, is endeavoring to infiltrate them into South America in any way possible to counteract the spread of Red doctrine. It has been reliably reported, for example that Dr. VRANCIC has already gone to South America and that Ante PAVELIC and General KREN are scheduled for an early departure to South America through Spain. All these operations are said to have been negotiated by DRAGANOVIC because of his influence in the Vatican.
  4. This agent will continue to make an effort to keep abreast of the situation in this area and also to advise G-2 of any new plans or changes of operations on the part of DRAGANOVIC and his satellites.

Excerpt from the September 5th report, showing that Jesuit trained, Roman Catholic priest Krunoslav Draganovic acquired immigration visas for his Ustashi Nazi terrorists so that they could escape to South America.

Father Krunoslav Draganovic, one of the main operatives on the Ratline, kept detailed lists of the "refugees" granted hospitality and a place of refuge at the monastery of San Girolamo, Rome. Army Counter-Intelligence Corps Agent William Gowen obtained these lists, which included the Ustashi suspects' real names as well as the aliases. After making copies, Gowen wrote up a lengthy memorandum and sent four copies to his superiors. None have ever been found, but one of the agents who received a copy of the list was Naples CIC Agent Robert Clayton Mudd. The following document summarizes Gowen's memorandum and draws attention to several Ustashi war criminals wanted by the Allied authorities on Draganovic's lists. Coming as it does after the famous instructions from Gowen's superiors to keep his "hands off" of Pavelic and other Ustashi leaders in Rome, it is possible to speculate that this report represented the last attempt by CIC agents still "in the dark" of the American plans to rescue Pavelic and Co. to inform their superiors of the vast extent of the Nazi and Ustashi smuggling network that Father Draganovic - and, unknown to Mudd and Gowen, those same superiors - had put into operation.

SUMMARY OF INFORMATION : SUBJECT: DRAGANOVIC, Krunoslav RE: Documentary Evidence Involving SUBJECT with Ustasha Activity at the San Girolamo Monastery, Rome.
  1. Attached photostats of personal files and documents of the Croat Nationalist priest DRAGANOVIC, Krunoslav procured in Rome indicate clearly his involvement in aiding and abetting the Ustashi to escape into South America. The documents also indicate his connections with Ustasha personnel, a fact which DRAGANOVIC has formally denied personally to this Agent.(Photostats to G 2 TRUST only).
  2. The first list includes the nominal role of all Croats who are fed, clothed, housed and otherwise provided for by the Monastery of San Girolamo, but it also includes the names of several long sought after Jugoslav War Criminals whose presence in the Monastery and whose sponsorship by the Vatican DRAGANOVIC has consistently denied.
  3. The names of the following Ustashi War Criminals are to benoted on this list :DEVCIC, Ivan Serial " 351

The second series of photostats indicates that DRAGANOVIC and the Monastery were doing their utmost to get immigration visas for Croat sailors in answer to the offers of several Central and South American countries to accept certain specified amounts of qualified sailors and maritime men. However, on this list are known names of compromised people.
  1. The Third List written in Spanish contains the names of 115 Croats with all their personal particulars. These 115 people have all expressed a desire to emigrate to ARGENTINA. It is very possible that this list of individuals have already shipped to the Argentine and it must be assumed that in the majority they are compromised Ustashi personalities with aliases. It seems only reasonable to assume that the more important personages will be, or would have been shipped out first.
  2. Enclosed here with also are the photographs of documents containing the pertinent data on such Ustasha personalities as BARIC, Vice, Kren, Vladimir, alias KRENMIR, Vladimir,BABIC, Ivan, HIBL, Josip alias HUBL, Josip, KAMBER, Dragutin alias KAMBER, Blaz, PAVICIC, Ante alias PAVICIC, Anton,SARIC, Ivan, SUSIC, Lovro alias SUSIC, Marijan, VRANCIC,Vjekoslav alias VRANIC, Petar.

History of Gamera

Gamera
ガメラ
In this particular article I will be explaining the origins of Gamera as well as how he came to be. I will be talking about the company that first created Gamera and how it was sold to other companies all the way up to what is happening today.
Gamera is a gigantic flying Terrapin that was created by Daiei Motion Picture Company and now is owned by Kadokawa Pictures and Publishing Company. Gamera first made it on the screen in 1965 and was created simply because of the success of his counterpart and more popular monster they call Godzilla who has been on the screen a little bit low living Gamera. Godzilla started out in 1954. It was the 1960s when the “Monster Boom gained its popularity in Japan as both of these monsters are Japanese icons.
During the 1970s Gamera did attain some prominence on what is called UHF television stations that would feature these movies every Saturday morning as a Saturday matinee type movie. Gamera is a gigantic turtle that door in the Showa Series he stood at 60 m tall and door and the Heisei series he was 80 m tall. To describe Gamera even more Gamera possesses a pronounced sagittal crest on the top of his head and his mouth was filled with gigantic tea with two gigantic fangs protruding from his lower jaw or tusks.
Gamera in the Showa Series was a titanic, firebreathing, prehistoric species of tortoise or Terrapin. Gamera fed off of the petroleum-based materials that were on the planet at that time as he consumed it in order to breathe fire and fire at the Jets that would attack him. It is also known that Gamera has the capabilities of flying were Godzilla does not. By consuming the petroleum he is capable of extracting his legs in and they would ignite with flames coming out of all four legs as he propels himself spinning into the air.
Now we will talk about the original classic 1965 movie it begins showing bombers from the USSR or Russia as they are being intercepted by American fighters over the United States airspace in the Arctic. As we all know this sets off cataclysmic explosions that release Gamera from the ice and he goes on a rampage and at the end of the movie he is lured into this bay where the top of the bay is closed up it is a rocket and he is sent off into space.
Gamera has become a legacy as the Daiei Company who owned Gamera went on to create a lot of movies for the Showa Series. The next one after the original classic would be Gamera vs. Barugon which came out in 1966 and then Gamera vs. Gyaos in 1967, Gamera vs. Virus 1968, and Gamera vs. Guiron 1969, Gamera vs. Jiger 1970, Gamera vs. Zigra 1971, and finally the super cheesiest of all Gamera movies it is called “Gamera: Super Monster” which came out in 1980.
For me the movies were really good until after Gamera vs. Gyaos 1967 and then they got silly and super child friendly until Heisei Series. However that would all change for the company that created Gamera The Daiei Motion Picture Company would go bankrupt. This particular company was a product of government efforts to reorganize the film industry during World War II in order to rationalize its resources and increase control over the medium. It was then that the government plan to combine all the film studios into two companies, Masaichi Nagata, an executive at Shinkō Kinema, pressed hard for an alternative plan to create three studios. His efforts won out and Shinkō Kinema, Daito Eiga, and the production arm of Nikkatsu (the Nikkatsu theaters did not take part in the merger) were merged in 1942 to form the Dai Nippon Eiga Seisaku Kabushiki Kaisha, or Daiei for short. The novelist Kan Kikuchi served as the first president, with Nagata continuing as an executive. Daiei's studios were located in Chofu, Tokyo and in Uzumasa in Kyoto.
Nagata became president in 1947 and, apart from a brief period when he was purged by Occupation authorities, remained in that position until 1971. Under his reign, Daiei produced Akira Kurosawa's Rashomon (1950) and entered it in the Venice Film Festival, where it won the grand prize and became the first Japanese film to win an international award, thus introducing Japanese cinema to the world. Daiei also produced Teinosuke Kinugasa's Gate of Hell (1953), the first Japanese color film to be shown abroad, earning both an honorary Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film and the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival. Daiei also produced such renowned films as Mizoguchi's Ugetsu (1953) and Sansho the Bailiff (1954), as well as Jokyo (which was entered into the 10th Berlin International Film Festival). On the popular front, Daiei was also known for such successful film series as the Zatoichi films starring Shintaro Katsu, the Sleepy Eyes of Death series featuring Raizō Ichikawa, the Gamera movies, and the Daimajin Trilogy. Daiei also produced many television series such as Shōnen Jet.
In its heyday, Daiei featured such talent as the actors Raizō Ichikawa, Shintaro Katsu, Kazuo Hasegawa, Fujiko Yamamoto, Machiko Kyō, and Ayako Wakao; the directors Kenji Mizoguchi, Kon Ichikawa, Yasuzo Masumura, and Kenji Misumi; and the cinematographer Kazuo Miyagawa.
Like some other film studios, Daiei had its own professional baseball team in the 1950s, the Daiei Stars, which later became the Daiei Unions. These teams eventually became the Chiba Lotte Marines.
Now let us talk about the bankruptcy of the Daiei Motion Picture Company it was back in 1971 when they tried to stay alive I teaming up with Nikkatsu and another motion picture company however with the combination of both motion picture companies it was just not enough. Because in 1971 they would declare bankruptcy and it would be the members of the union who however succeeded in getting Yasuyoshi Tokuma, the president of the publishing house, Tokuma Shoten, to revive the company in 1974.
This particular version of the Daiei motion picture company would go on to be making only a small number of films, some of which were big budget spectaculars like the international coproduction “The Go Masters” which came out in 1982 and the ever popular and ever loving “Shall We Dance?” Which came out in 1996 and later in the United States this movie would be re-created using Richard Gere, Jennifer Lopez, Susan Sarandon and a very popular cast. This movie turned out to be a very good movie both versions of this movie are very good in their own way. After all the films were produced it would soon be after the passing Yasuyoshi Tokuma, Daiei Film Co. He died on September 20, 2000 in Tokyo, Japan and the company was sold to the Kadokawa Shoten Publishing Co.
In November 2002, Chairman Maihiko Kadokawa announced that Daiei Film Co. would merge with the company’s own film division, Kadokawa Pictures to form Kadokawa-Daiei Film Co. Ltd. it was during the time that when Yasuyoshi Tokuma, owned the Daiei company he would go on to create the three movie set of the Heisei Series Gamera movies as they are respectively titled “Gamera: Guardian of the Universe” (1995), “Gamera vs. Legion” (1996), and the last movie to speak of is “Gamera vs. Iris” (1999) and these particular movies were directed by Shesuke Kaneko who also directed the Godzilla film “GMK” which came out in 2001 for the Toho company. It is these three movies that puts Gamera back in the game with special effects as well as storyline and acting that surpasses any Godzilla film out there. It was these three movies that were critically acclaimed by the Japanese people.
In November 2002 when the company was purchased by Kadokawa Shoten Publishing Co. they would create another Gamera movie however they would go back to the Showa Series and this particular movie is very kid friendly and altered in a way that it upset a lot of Gamera fans. This movie even though it was child friendly the Gamera in this movie did not look like any Gamera most people recognize. The worst part about it is that this Gamera did not have a signature roar. Another key note is they change the origins of Gamera as he is capable of exploding which to me did not make any sense however he has to consume a red rock in order to go through changes to become the Gamera that we all know he can be he cannot do this without that red rock. They tentatively name this new Gamera “Toto” he does in fact fight a monster they call “Zedus” this is a gigantic lizard like monster with a big long purple top. To me this monster is not really a worthy competitor to what Gamera has fallen in the past. However it is very accommodating that he fights a tiny Gamera which in this case he does. This movie failed in a lot of ways as it is coming from the triple threat they gave Gamera a dark and eerie presence to a child friendly presence. This particular point is what most fans did not care about the movie.
Here is some more interesting facts about Gamera and the company that created him. In 1966 the movie that was released in America as Gamera the invincible is the original 1965 classic that was directed by Noriaki Yuasa and this story was written by Nisan Takahashi it quickly became a favorite to the children who love watching Gamera fight monsters. Like I mentioned above there was a total of seven films that was produced from 1965 to 1971 and the eighth entry was slated for a 1972 release this is where the loss projects come into play and this is a movie that never came to be and this is because the company was in the bankruptcy stage before being picked back up in 1974 they had to scrap this movie because of it. The movie was called “Gamera vs. Garasharp” which would have come out in 1972 but was forced to cease production because of the bankruptcy. This particular movie would have been about Gamera fighting a snake like creature that had the hood of a cobra and the snake body with antennas on its head.
As I mentioned before the company would go on to produce the Heisei Series of Gamera movies but for all that they wanted to produce another movie that would actually come out in 1980 it was called “Gamera: Super Monster” the filmmakers at this time were forced to make this film simply because of the contracts for one more Gamera film that was owed to the original Daiei company. It was an unfortunate event that when creating this film it was mostly stock footage with new scenes of a brand-new Gamera flying. It was when the production of the film began that Yuasa saw how poorly Tokuma was handling things and knew that Gamera could have never come back from the film. So he had Takahashi rewrite the ending to where Gamera was killed at the end.
Last but not least let us talk about some upcoming and future films for Gamera fans. It was noted in that on March 2014 “Anime News Network reported that a new Gamera production is planned, with no date specified however it is planned to be released sometime in 2015. Some rumors and speculations have risen on the Internet and here are some in my humble opinion something that do not like to hear.
It is said they will change Gamera’s form now what that means is they might completely alter the look of Gamera and honestly I am not sure that is a smart thing unless they change his looks to the point that you still recognize him like they do with the Godzilla suits.
Another thing they are going to change is his origins and they did that in the last movie called “Gamera Little Brave” which came out in 2006 and that in my opinion was not a good thing for the way they portrayed Gamera in this movie it would have been okay for kids but I did not personally care for the way they handled it. Assuming they are going to change the origin in this movie I hope it has something interesting to which will not be a bad thing I think the worst thing that gets to me is a going to change the looks of Gamera I am not sure how to handle that, but we will have to wait and see.
The last keynote that I want to mention is I have heard rumors and speculations that Kadokawa Pictures are thinking about removing Gamera and the fact that he flies and I hope this is just a rumor because honestly in my opinion this would be the most stupid thing they have ever done. Keep in mind it is the 50th anniversary movie for Gamera so for them to create a film they need to completely alter the entire franchise of Gamera give us a completely different Gamera that we could be pleased with, and again we will have to wait and see how they do this!
Now this particular article is based on some trivial facts and understanding of what Gamera is and how he was created and what companies owned him and what the companies went through all the way up to today with also updates on the new Gamera movie for his 50th anniversary and I am hoping they will do this well. I hope you enjoy this article!
The End

2020.09.17 23:16 HolidayAbroad Eternity in His Eyes

Charles stopped at a hot dog stand three blocks away from the hospital. His name wasn’t really Charles, but that was the name he was using now; he even had an ID card in his wallet that identified him as Charles R. Fellows. His real name...well, to be honest, he wasn’t so sure what his real name was. It had been an eon since he’d last used it. There were times when he thought he could recall what it was, but then the certainty would fade as he became convinced that the name he remembered was just another alias he’d once gone by. But his real name didn’t matter. What mattered at the moment was that the little, mustachioed man working the hot dog stand didn’t put any mustard on the dog. To Charles, this was unacceptable. A hot dog without mustard was like peanut butter without jelly.
“Mustard,” Charles said.
The man looked up at him. Charles was nearly a foot taller than the hot dog man, and so the man was forced to crane his neck to look into Charles’s eyes. Well, not his eyes, but the dark shades that he wore over his eyes.
“What you want?” the hot dog man said in a thick accent Charles couldn't quite place. “I give you hot dog. What is problem?”
“Mustard,” Charles repeated.
Charles’s lips were exceptionally red, the kind of red that a kid’s lips took on when drinking cherry-flavored Kool-Aid. Now those red lips spread into a grin that managed to be friendly and threatening at the same time. The little man kept looking into the dark lenses of the sunglasses like he was trying to look past them so that he could see Charles’s eyes. Charles wondered how the man would feel if he were successful in that endeavor, if he really got to see his eyes. He didn’t think the hot dog man would like what he saw, not one bit.
The hot dog man relented.
“Mustard,” the man said, reaching for the yellow squeeze bottle and squirting a thin line onto Charles’s hot dog.
“Thank you,” Charles said.
The hot dog man didn’t respond, simply moving on to the next customer, a man in a business suit who looked to be in a hurry. As Charles walked away from the hot dog stand, taking a big bite of the dog, the little man watched him go. Later that night, as his wife lay asleep beside him, her breathing deep and even as she dreamed her dreams, the hot dog man would lie awake in bed, thinking about the tall man with the red lips and dark sunglasses. He wouldn’t be able to put his finger on it, but he would not be able to shake off the feeling that he had barely escaped mortal danger that day. It was something like a lion-tamer must feel on the day when one of his cats charges him in a fit of anger, only to break away at the last moment, slinking away to the other side of the cage. The man would eventually fall asleep, and he would never think of Charles again in his waking life; he will dream about him occasionally, but he will not remember these dreams upon waking.
Charles finished the hot dog by the time he reached the hospital, tossing the wrapper it had been served on and the one thin napkin he’d been given into a green trashcan outside the building. He stood looking up at the hospital, all five stories of it, thinking it fortunate that he knew which room Mr. Scalise was in; otherwise, it could have taken all day to find him.
Charles entered the hospital. The lobby was mostly empty. A few people sat around on chairs, reading the day’s news or old magazines, whatever had been lying around on the various low tables set about the lobby. Charles stopped behind one man and peered over his shoulder at the newspaper the man was engrossed in. His eyes scanned the date at the top of the page.
September 3, 1965.
Time worked funny for Charles, and he shook his head when seeing the date. He’d lost a year somewhere; he’d been sure that it was still sixty-four. He walked on. An ancient-looking woman sitting behind the reception desk watched him as he headed for the elevator bank. He punched the button to call the elevator as the old woman leaned over her desk so that she could get a better view of him.
“Excuse me, sir,” she croaked. “You have to check in here before going upstairs.”
Charles said nothing; he just waited for the elevator.
“Sir? You need to check in with me.”
Still, he said nothing. The elevator dinged, the doors sliding smoothly.
“May I ask your busies here today, sir? Sir? Sir!”
Charles stepped into the elevator and the doors slid closed. He punched the button for the third floor, and the elevator started to rise. He had the car to himself, which was fine by him. When the elevator stopped, he stepped out of the car and into a white hall that smelled strongly of disinfectant. The hall stretched out to the left and the right; Charles turned right. A doctor walking in the opposite direction looked up from some paperwork, looked away, and then did a double-take, taking in the tall man in the blue suit and dark shades. The doctor passed by, turning his attention to his paperwork again.
The hall ended in a T, a new hall stretching off to both the right and left at ninety-degree angles. In the center of the T, there was a nurse’s station. The nurse looked up from a form she’d been filling out as Charles got his bearings.
“Can I help you, sir?” she asked.
“It’s that way, right?” he said, pointing off to the right. “Yes, I’m sure of it; it’s that way.”
He started in that direction, but the woman’s voice rose sharply:
“Nobody is allowed down that wing without permission. I’ll need your name to see if it’s on the list.”
He stopped and turned toward her, saying nothing. His lips spread into a smile again, the same one he’d shown the hot dog man.
“This is no business of yours,” he said.
He could see that the woman feared him. Even so, she wouldn’t let it go.
“I’ll need your name to check it against my list, sir….or should I just call for security?”
The smile died on his lips.
“Okay, then,” he said.
He stepped closer, towering over the seated woman.
“Let me show you something,” he said.
Charles reached up and pulled down the shades, revealing his eyes. The woman sat frozen, staring up into those cold eyes. Her lips started to shake, and a tear rolled down one cheek. A low, mewling sound escaped her throat. Charles put the shades back on.
“Why did you show me that?” she asked. “I didn't want to see it.”
“You should have let me go on my way.”
“I didn’t want to know that. I didn’t want to see it.”
Charles left her there, continuing on with his mission. As he walked away, the nurse reached into a drawer of her desk and took out a long pair of scissors.
“You shouldn’t have shown me. I didn’t want to see it.”
Charles was no longer listening, however. He heard the screams as the nurse began stabbing herself with the sharp end of the scissors, driving the blades into her flesh. The initial screams were her own, and the later ones were from the other nurses who came running to see what was wrong.
The hall curved, and Charles saw a uniformed police officer sitting on a chair outside of a room. The cop stood from the chair, setting down the paperback he’d been reading and resting a hand on the butt of his service revolver.
“What’s the deal with all that screamin’?” the cop asked. “Who are you?”
Charles didn’t reply.
“Stop right there, bub. Ain’t nobody supposed to come near this room.”
The cop loosened the strap on his gun. Charles wasn’t worried. He reached up again and took off his sunglasses.
“Look at me, officer,” he said. “I want you to see everything.”
The cop looked, staring up into Charles’s eyes and seeing everything, seeing it all.
“I...I...n-n-no.”
That was as much as the cop was able to get out before taking the revolver out of its holster, sticking it into his mouth, and pulling the trigger. Charles put the shades back on and stepped over the cop, careful not to step in the blood. He went into the patient’s room. A balding man lay in the bed, propping himself up on his elbows. He wore a thin hospital gown, and he looked pale.
“What the hell is goin’ on out there?” the man asked.
“Hello, Mister Scalise,” Charles said.
Fear passed over the man’s face like a shadow.
“How do you know my name?” the man asked. “Nobody is supposed to know my real name. Not even the nurses know that.”
“Oh, but I know your name. I know everything about you.”
The man in the hospital bed looked past Charles, his gaze dropping down until he saw the cop and what had become of him. Scalise looked up at Charles.
“Mary, Mother of God. You’re him, ain’t you? The one they tell stories about. I thought they were just fairy tales told to scare guys like me.”
“I am him, Mister Scalise, and I am very real.”
Sweat had broken out on the man’s bald pate even though the room was cool.
“What are they payin’ you?” Scalise asked. “I’ve got money. I’ve got so much of it that I don’t know what to do with it.”
“You mean the feds let you keep it?” Charles asked.
“I had to give them some of it, but I didn’t tell them about all of it. What do you think I am, a sucker?”
Scalise tried laughing, but the laugh died when Charles didn’t join in.
“I still got lots of cash, tons of it. I’ll pay you double what they’re paying you. No, I’ll pay triple!”
Charles shook his head.
“I don’t do this for money, Mister Scalise.”
The man on the bed was breathing heavily.
“I’ll give you everything. I’ll give you every last cent, and you can tell them that you killed me. I’ll disappear, and they’ll never be the wiser. I swear.”
“It’s time,” Charles said, reaching up for his shades. “I need to show you something now.” “No, please no!” Scalise said, lying back on the bed and shutting his eyes tight. “I don’t want to see it! You can’t make me see it!” But Charles knew differently. He set the sunglasses on the little table next to the bed and reached down to Scalise’s face. Using his fingers, he pried the man’s eyelids open. Scalise tried batting his hands away, but Charles was stronger. He opened the man’s eyes, and Scalise saw what the cop had seen, what the nurse had seen.
Charles walked out of the room, the shades covering eyes once again, just as Vito Scalise was opening the window in his room so that he could throw himself out of it. With their star witness dead, the state would have to drop its case against the head of the Russo crime family. Soon after, a good deal of money would be deposited into a bank account tied to one of Charles’s aliases, but what he’d told Scalise had been true: it wasn’t about the money for him. It never had been.
Charles encountered no trouble in leaving the hospital. Everyone was so wrapped up in dealing with the nurse who lay in a pool of blood at the nurse’s station that they hadn’t even noticed the cop guarding Scalise’s room was dead. Outside the hospital, people were gathered around the broken body of Vito Scalise, the old woman from the reception desk among them. Charles walked away from the hospital then. As the sound of police sirens neared, Charles slipped his hands into his pockets and started to whistle, and he was still whistling to himself when he got far enough away that he could no longer hear the sirens.
