2020.03.13 21:40 tracksuits4all Las Vegas Wedding Budget $24K, 106 guests - Budget Recap

To Start: He proposed February 2019 and we got married March 2020, so just over a year of planning for the wedding, I had not started any sort of preplanning before the proposal. We both agreed to put away $1000/month each to cover us for 12 months which gave us the budget of $24,000 for the wedding - we did not receive any financial assistance for the wedding day (his parents paid for the rehearsal dinner). We live in Las Vegas and 90% of our guests do not so it was a destination wedding for everyone but us.
Budget: $24,000
Actual Spent: $22,516
Guests Invited: 160
Guests Attending: 106
Pictures!
Venue - $4,125
I visited 3 places and The Doyle was my second visit and I knew I needed to get married there. Its a 1940s warehouse converted into event space and they are very flexible on what you can do with it because they want it to be yours for the day. Tables/Chairs are included but you need to provide the linens/catering/bartender. They did have a projector so we could play a video of our childhood pictures during the cocktail hour. They also had lovely farmhouse tables we could use for the cake, guestbook, etc. The place is so beautiful on its own I didnt need to do much decorating and they also had a closet FULL of decor left over from other events that I was free to use, which I absolutely did.
Catering - $2,490
Taco Truck ($1740) - we had 3 different meats, floucorn tortillas, grilled veggies, quesadillas, guac, salsa, AND they included all the plates/utensils for the evening. Hands down one of the best decisions we made - everyone was full and kept raving about how good the tacos were. Bonus was that we got to take all the leftovers home so we feasted on taco meat and all the fixins for a few days after.
Churro Truck ($750) - this was our late night eats impulse buy and was 100% worth it. They had different types of churros, horchata and coffee available. Only downside was that they were outside so the dance floor was a little empty while everyone waited outside for their churros. Again, everyone was raving about them so it was totally worth it.
Bartending - $2551
Yes, we spent more on alcohol than food. The venue required a licensed and insured person to facilitate the alcohol so bringing in our own was off the table. We selected the premium package which is midshelf liquor (Titos, Makers Mark, etc), wine, beer, soda, juice, etc. We also added on two signature cocktails - mine was The Amelia after our dog and his was The Widget after the airline he flies for - both were a big hit. (Side note: Cocktail tasting is WAY better than cake tasting in my opinion)
Photography - $2,612
Photographer ($2400) was amazing. This price included our engagement session and 8 hours of wedding day photography. I loved our engagement photos so Im super excited to get the wedding ones back! He was everywhere and yet never in the way the entire time, really great guy.
TacBoard ($212) - instead of getting a photo booth, we decided to use TacBoard which is an online streaming service for your event. It came with table cards that had our unique phone number written on them and encouraged guests to text their photos in to that number to be displayed as a live feed during the wedding. At the end of it I could download all the photos our guests had uploaded instead of chasing them down to get pictures from them, it was really convenient. Bonus is that they include all the printed signs and a few props to use if you want to create a photo both station (which we did).
Flowers - $250
I made them all myself (bouquet, centerpieces, sweetheart table centerpiece, and bridesmaids bouquets). Got all the flowers from Michaels and waited for sales or for them to go off season before I purchased, I thought they turned out really nice.
Cake - $120
We went with Nothing Bundt Cakes and got the little mini ones - ordered 70 in 8 different flavors because we did have the churro truck coming later. We ended up bringing about 24 of them home only because we didnt do a formal cake cutting so I dont think people realized they were there until later in the evening when the DJ made an announcement. Im not mad about bringing them home, they are delicious!
Wedding Dress & Tuxedo - $2,367
Dress ($1,562) - I paid a lot more than I thought I would for a dress but I was also incredibly happy with it so theres that. Its DaVinci style #50444 and it had the lace I wanted plus it was comfortable AND I could sit in it without struggling to breathe. The veil was my mom's who had passed away - it was slightly off color from the dress but I didnt care and no one noticed.
Alterations ($455) - eeek didnt think it would be this much but here we are. Included bringing the straps in since they were bunching, shortening the dress because Im 5'1 and a 3 point bustle (which broke almost immediately, so boo to that).
Wedding Shoes ($110) - ordered blue sequined chuck's off of Etsy because I cant wear heels for longer than an hour before I hate myself. They were beautiful AND comfy, best decision ever to wear those all day. (all the jewelry I already owned so no cost for that)
Tuxedo ($240) - rented from Men's Warehouse
DJ - $650
Found him on WeddingWire and opted to just email him directly instead of through the Wedding Wire website which worked out way better because I keep hearing from other brides that WW is a little glitchy or makes the vendor pay them to be able to respond so eff that noise. Our DJ was great! He is a local high school music teacher who just DJs as a fun hobby and he was so wonderful. Kept everyone engaged and played some great music.
Invites - $329
Save the Dates ($136) I ordered them off of Zazzle because I had a coupon. They were basic and didnt match our wedding invites and you know what? IT DIDNT MATTER. Dont feel like you have to make everything match because I guarantee a lot of people will not even notice.
Invitations ($113) ordered these off of Vista print and it included envelopes, main invitation and a 'hotel card' which directed everyone to our wedding website for online RSVPing
Postage ($80) thanks to Weddit, I got stamps discounted on Amazon during a flash sale!
Favors & Gifts - $478
Bridesmaids Gifts ($203) - got beach bags and makeup bags on sale from The Knot then added in a silk robe from amazon and a face mask from Target. I also wrote them each a note with my top 10 memories and why I picked them as bridesmaids, it made them cry so WIN.
Groomsmen Gifts ($200) - Each one got a big Yeti travel mug with a mini bottle of Jager in it
Glow Sticks and Temporary Tattoos ($75) - got the tattoos off of Etsy and it was a hilarious hit, people were putting them on their necks, arms, cheeks, etc. The glow sticks were from Walmart and a total last minute impulse buy but everyone really liked them.
Hair & Makeup - $1,724
I ended up buying myself, 7 bridesmaids and 2 moms their hair and makeup because we were under budget at the time so I wanted to give them something as a surprise. This included hair, makeup and my trial that was done a few months prior. If it was just me on my own it would have been $200 I believe.
Limos/Shuttles - $985
Booked a shuttle for the wedding party to drive around downtown and take pictures prior to the wedding. Also booked two shuttles to run guests from the hotel to the venue - it honestly wasnt that far but it was in kind of a sketchy part of town so it was just easier to wrangle everyone this way plus it put a beginning and end on the wedding/reception instead of having people linger. Worked out really well and took the stress out of it for the guests.
Rings - $885
Mine was a simple band from Noemi and his was from Shane Co - both turned out really great!
Tablecloths - $175
My sister in law bought them off Tablecloth Factory I believe and I paid for half. Once their wedding was over we washed them all and stored them for my wedding. Looked great for the day of and hoping to sell them on facebook marketplace or somewhere similar!
Day-of Coordinator - $1,500
Totally worth it, even though some consider it a splurge. She started working a month out and read through all my contracts and contacted all the vendors to verify final payments, schedules, etc. She kept everything running on time and was the main point of contact for all the vendors. This was extremely helpful for me because I travel internationally a lot for work so not being in the same time zone the weeks leading up to the big day were stressful at times. She helped set everything up and take everything down so we really could just go on and enjoy the day.
Artist - $1,200
Ok, admittedly this WAS a splurge but Im so happy I did it. We like to collect artwork from local artists from places we have visited so when I saw her at the Bridal Expo I was hooked, She was a local artist who offered live event painting - she comes to the wedding, sets up in the back, and paints the wedding as its happening! It was a really fun thing for the guests to walk up and watch her work. She is putting the finishing touches on painting and then will ship it to me and Im so excited to see the final product - its something unique for us to hang in our house.
Paper Goods - $75
I designed and printed all the table centerpiece signs, escort cards, cake table flavor sign, specialty drink signs and remembrance table sign - the cost was simply the paper and I ended up buying an inkjet printer on sale at walmart to print everything.
Final Thoughts: The day was so perfect, truly. The online RSVPs were more of a headache than I thought they would be, 1 person never even bothered to RSVP or tell me they werent coming and I had to hear about it from another wedding guest). Most people didnt read through my incredibly detailed website that would have answered all their questions and instead opted to ask me directly which stressed me out - luckily my sister stepped in to field those calls.
One project I took on was gathering a wedding picture from everyone coming to the wedding so I could put them all on a collage and hang it as a photo booth backdrop. Everyone enjoyed looking at all the pictures and seeing the wedding trends of the decades since it spanned from the 1950s to now. It took a lot of work but Im so glad I stuck with it.
We had zero children at the wedding, not even a flower girl/ring bearer. I initially wanted my friend's kids to partake but their stance was "I love my kids but please dont make me bring them to Vegas for 30 seconds of work". A LOT of parents were really happy we opted for no kids because it gave them a chance to have a weekend away and those who didnt like our stance simply didnt come.
We were worried about flipping the room from ceremony to reception and how long it would take. Our solution was to have all the tables and chairs set up for the reception AND ceremony - no flipping needed other than to bring out our sweetheart table. We had chairs up front for our parents and siblings to get a front row seat which was awesome.
It really does go by so fast. A years worth of planning and its all over in a matter of hours! Do whats important to you, don't sweat the small stuff and enjoy your spouse throughout all of it and beyond.

2019.08.08 21:06 honeybadger808 Sometimes the best things in life are free, like these great Mac apps!

Get the greatest free apps on your Mac without having to dig through the entire Mac App Store!
The Mac App Store is full of all manner of apps, from simple utilities to complex programs. New apps are published every day, making it hard to find the best of the best — which is where we come in. We've gathered the best free apps for the Mac, all in one place so you don't have to go digging.

My criteria for apps on this list

In researching the best free apps for the Mac, I started by using Apple's category list. This makes it easier to cover the wide variety of content available. If an app is on the Mac App Store, it is in one of the 21 categories that Apple has listed.
Because this is a "free" app list, I tried to only include apps that are truly free or whose functionality is not diminished without an in-app purchase. You will see some apps that have premium content that can be unlocked with an in-app purchase, but I've included them on the list because I feel that the free content is noteworthy.
Since this is a list of apps, I'm not including services that only have websites without a dedicated app (there are two exceptions to this rule on the list, but they are totally worthy of rule-bending).
I've included some apps that are not available in the Mac App Store. That's because some of the best apps in a given category are so much better than any Mac App Store counterpart that I couldn't exclude them.
Though this list is long, it is by no means complete. There are just too many free Mac apps available to include everything. If you don't see your favorite free Mac app on this list, please add it in the comments section with your reason for why it stands out. (Remember: It has to be truly free or the free version of an otherwise premium app that is noteworthy.)

Business

Slack

Slack is a must-have app for anyone working remotely with others. It is the best business chat app around. The Mac app is a chat window, so you can keep your conversations going without having to log into a web browser every time. You can have multiple accounts running at the same time and there are dozens of helpful bots that you can add to any chat room.

Wave

Wave is one of those exceptions to the rule of no services without a dedicated app. It is a free software tool for small businesses. You can use it for invoicing, receipts, accounting, and more. You can also add credit card processing and payroll for a small additional fee. It is set up to work with what your business needs are. If you don't need a feature, you aren't paying for it. If you only need a feature sometimes, you only pay when you use it. Because Wave is dedicated to making small business tools work the way small business owners need them to, I've included it on this list.

Developer tools

Xcode

Xcode is the macOS, iOS, tvOS, and watchOS developer's handiest tool. It supports coding for Swift, Objective-C, Python, and a whole lot more. It can build universal binary files to run on PowerPC and Intel-based computers, and developers can create apps for 32-bit and 64-bit architectures. It's got everything an Apple coder needs.

TextWrangler

When it comes to coding, nothing keeps your characters more organized than TextWrangler. The text editor works with a wide variety of coding syntax and even has color coding for different programming languages. You can easily access files on FTP and SFTP servers. It is also a fantastic app for non-programmers for its many smaller details, like line wrapping, email templates, and quote styles. It is one of the best free code editors around.

Atom

Atom is another fantastic, free text and code editor for the Mac. This one is not available in the Mac App Store, but is highly rated among programmers. It has a built-in package manager with wide support for a number of different packages. It integrates with HTML, JavaScript, CSS, and Node.js and allows programmers to code across platforms. It is highly customizable so that you can create the most ideal coding atmosphere to help keep you working quickly.

Education

Khan Academy

Khan Academy is another exception to my rule that a service must have a dedicated app, but it is such a fantastic learning website, rich with online study courses of all levels — for free — that I had to include it. You can learn the colors of the rainbow or the Pythagorean Theorem. It covers basic subjects and works you into deeper involvement, just like you would start off taking basic classes in school and move into more advanced curricula. You can also prepare for the SAT, MCAT, GMAT, IIT JEE, and NCLEX-RN with excellent study guides. It is a great resource for getting started or back into your education.

iTunes U

Right inside the iTunes app on your Mac is a universe of knowledge. There are thousands of specialized courses, which you can download for free, that are lead by professors at some of the most popular colleges in the world. You can learn statistics from Harvard, business from Stanford, psychology from Yale, and much more. Subjects cover architecture to women's studies, with practically everything you can think of in between. To access iTunes U, open iTunes on your Mac and select it from the menu.

Entertainment

HandBrake

HandBrake is a free, open-source software program that lets you convert practically any media file to MP4, M4V, or MKV. You can convert your entire DVD or Blu-ray collection into digital form to watch on your Apple TV without having to pay someone to do it for you. You can quickly choose which type of device you want your file to be transcoded to support (like iOS or tvOS) and then get to converting within just a few seconds. For more advanced file conversion fans, there are a number of great features to help you perfect your digital movie catalog.

VLC media player

VLC is the best free, open-source media player for the Mac. With it, you can play nearly any media file, including MPEG-2, MPEG-4, MKV, WebM, WMV, and much more. It has a number of customizable features so you can create your ideal viewing situation or set up your music listening experience the way you want. It does support DVD and Blu-ray decryption through the libdvdcss library if you are so inclined to use it.

Spotify

If you're not using Apple Music (actually, even if you are), Spotify is the next best music streaming service for the Mac. With the Mac app, you can listen to thousands of songs across all genres. It includes a useful playlist section so you can keep track of your favorite music. It also has a great music discovery section where you can see what's trending or music you might like based on what you've been listening to. The social aspect makes it one of my favorite free social media apps for the iPhone, too.

Finance

Debit & Credit - Personal Finance

If you prefer to keep track of your finances manually, Debit & Credit is a great checkbook balancing app (I know, no one balances a checkbook anymore). You manually enter every transaction and income, and you can keep track of what you're spending with the budget list. The report feature is the best. You can view your spending habits by category, where you spend, your income and expenses differences, whether you are able to save, and more. There is an in-app purchase to unlock more than two accounts, but if you only have two bank accounts, you don't need the premium service.
Download now

Money Wiz 2 ~ Personal Finance

Money Wiz is a great personal finance tracker for balancing your bank account. The free version lets you manually add account information like income, expenses, and account transfers. If you sign up for the monthly subscription, you can connect your online bank accounts and have the work done for you. You can also create a budget (though you can only track one budget before being asked to upgrade). You can also set up a schedule reminder to keep you on track for paying bills that are due at the same time each month. It features a few more customizable features, like creating a new category for income and expenses, as well as creating financial reports based on your net worth, cash flow, and balance over time. Money Wiz works better with the subscription upgrade, but is very useful for keeping your checking accounts balanced.

Graphics & Design

GIMP

GIMP is pretty much the open-source version of Photoshop. You can fix minor photo errors, like light balance and contrast, or manipulate your image using the masking and removing features, similar to that of Photoshop's. You can also add filters, resize, create layers, mix up background objects, and a whole lot more. It's the best free version of Photoshop you can use on the Mac.

Autodesk Sketchbook

Autodesk is famous for its artists' apps, which feature a rich selection of brushes that seem hyper-realistic. You can use it to create vector graphic images, illustrations, and photorealistic works of art. There are dozens of customizable pens, pencils, and paintbrushes, and the color palette is so robust that you can perfectly match practically any color in the world. The free download comes with dozens of amazing tools, but you can upgrade to the pro version to unlock even more options. It is a graphic artist's best tool on the Mac.

Health & Fitness

Time Out - Break Reminders

Taking a moment for oneself is one of the most difficult health and fitness steps to take. We get so caught up with our busy schedules that we forget to stop for a moment. Time Out forces you to take those little breaks by dimming your screen so you can't use it for a specified amount of time. You can set up small breaks every hour, micro-breaks every 15 minutes, and lunch breaks to get your eyes off the screen for a half-hour or so. You can configure how long the breaks are and how often you take them. It'll make your eyes, your muscles, and your heart a little bit healthier every day you use it.

Relax Lite - Stress and Anxiety Relief

When the stress of the day starts to overwhelm you, use Relax to help you take things down a notch. It is a simple window with relaxing visual images and calming music that includes special tones to help cue your breathing exercises. There are guided meditation sessions you can take part in and deep-breathing exercises that will help you focus and reduce stress. Sometimes, you just need to check out for 10 minutes in order to be a more productive person.

iBooks Author

If you fancy yourself a writer, Apple's iBooks Author is the perfect app to get your work published without having to sign a publishing contract. You can use Apple's pre-made templates to help facilitate the perfect design. Add images, a video introduction, book cover, and more for a more immersive experience. With the multitouch widgets, you can make your pages interactive. Add photos, audio, Keynote presentations, and 3D objects. When you've finished you can upload it to the iBooks Store with the in-app export tools. You'll be a famous author before you know it!

Trillian

How many chat and messaging programs are you signed up with? If it's more than one, you need Trillian. It combines all of your chat and messaging accounts into one simple interface so you don't have to switch between apps to talk to your friends and family. You can chat through Facebook, Twitter, Google Chat, Yahoo, Bonjour, and more, all in one window. Chat services are delineated by color coding, so you know where a message is coming from. If you have too many chat channels and want to keep them all in one place, use Trillian to keep them organized.

Medical

Complete Anatomy

You've never seen the human body the way it is presented in this medical book. It shows you the entire make up of the body's systems. For free, you can examine, in interactive 3D, the entire skeletal and connective tissue layers, including names of bones, surfaces, insertion points, and more. You can zoom in on specific areas of the body for detailed interactions and animate muscle movements. You'll learn more about human anatomy than you ever thought possible.

Music

Audacity

Audacity is one of the best free audio editors. You can record live audio for podcasts, turn tapes and records into digital music, and edit tracks. If the original recording is a little too bright, you can add a filter to bring down the highs. Trim the excess off of the front or back of a recording, and even blend one track into another. It is very easy to use, so you don't have to be a professional recording artist to get into it.

Cross DJ Free

DJ programs can be a pain in the pocketbook. If you're just learning the ropes or want to have a homegrown dance party, don't spend the heavy cash. Cross DJ makes it possible for you to spin the beats without the expensive software. It features waveforms, beat sync, track cueing, loops, digital scratching, and more. It accesses your iTunes library directly, so you don't even have to load up new music. You may eventually upgrade to a more robust DJ app, but this is definitely a great starter program.

Shazam

The popular song identification program that was folded into Siri on the iPhone is also available on the Mac. Shazam listens to your music and tells you what you want to know about it. While it's running, it will tell you the name of a song and artist. While you're listening to tunes, it will automatically create a playlist of tracks you can listen to with Apple Music (when available), even if you are currently listening to music with a different service. Click a track to see lyrics and watch music videos on Shazam's website, too.

News

RSS Bot - News Notifier

RSS Bot is like having a news feed right in your Menu bar. When you log in, you can add any RSS feed to it and then quickly view new content with a single click. You can set up the service to notify you when new posts are published, or just check on things yourself when you have the time. If you read a blog that covers more subjects than you are interested in, you can set up a filter that will only show you articles that match keywords you designate.

Pocket

Pocket is sort of like the folder your mom used to keep with newspaper and magazine clippings in it. You can save articles, videos, recipes, and more, right in Pocket for reading later. It's the perfect app for people who like to browse the entirety of the internet with no real focus, but don't have the time to read everything they come across. Save articles for offline viewing so you can read new content while you are on the bus or at the park. The app has a nifty tool that highlights the most important articles of the day, so you can read content organized by priority.

Photography

Fotor

Fotor is a super easy photo editing app for the Mac that lets you create fun and unique projects from your collection. You can adjust the lighting, tweak the white balance, add a fun border, lay on a filter, and even add text boxes. It supports batch editing, so you can stylize all of your vacation photos at the same time. The collage tool lets you create pages with multiple photos that you can customize to your liking. It is a fun, simple way to edit your photos without the complex tools that you need to know about with Photoshop.

Polarr Photo Editor Lite

Polarr is a basic photo editing app with excellent tools for image adjusting. You can adjust color, light, clarity, highlights, shadows, and more. Add effects like color shadows, lens distortions, vignettes, and filters. This app works best when you are trying to enhance your pictures, not when you are trying to get artsy with them. If you can't seem to get your picture just right, trigger one of the helpful tutorials to learn how to brighten dark images or properly add white balance. There are dozens of pro-level tools, but they are designed to be used by anyone.

Evernote

Evernote is like that basket you have next to the couch or that drawer in your kitchen that has _everything_in it. You can clip web pages, link status updates, add music, store pictures, create new notes, and share anything you want with others. Not only is it the perfect junk drawer for every digital thing you could possibly want to save, but it is also totally organizable so your junk looks more like a perfectionist's desk. You can make checklists, set reminders, drop notes into existing documents, annotate pictures, and all manner of stuff. It does practically everything except fix the kitchen sink.

TickTick

TickTick is a great choice if you want an easy to use task manager that is still powerful enough to help you feel productive. TickTick is completely cross-platform across 10 different platforms, and you can even access all of your tasks on the web. Adding tasks can be done with a keyboard shortcut, you get instant reminders, flexibility with recurring tasks and priority levels, checklists, and sync. There are no restrictions, but you can go with TickTick Premium for more features like grid views of timeline and calendars, smart lists, sub-task reminders, and more. They're nice bonuses, but you can get the basic functionality (which is more than enough for most) for free.

Microsoft OneNote

If Evernote isn't really your thing (you do need a subscription to get the most use out of it), then consider Microsoft OneNote. Think of OneNote as your digital notebook for capturing everything: thoughts, discoveries, ideas, notes, etc. You can create multiple notebooks for different topics or subjects, and each notebook can hold an unlimited number of notes. Your notes can include just plain text, drawings, PDF documents, files, web snippets, and pretty much anything else you would possibly need to reference later.

Friendly for Twitter is a lightweight app that lets you log in to all of your Twitter accounts, and then some. Apple Maps

Apple's built-in mapping service is really convenient to have on the Mac. You may not realize how often you look up the location of something while on your computer, but it is a fairly common occurrence, at least for me. Having Maps integrated with every aspect of your Mac makes it easy to look up directions from anywhere, like an email, a website, or a contact card. Siri can use Apple Maps to help you find all manner of locations in just a few seconds. It's already on your Mac and works great with all of the other built-in apps, too.

Google Earth

You may think of Google Maps as a means to get from point A to point B, but there is so much more to discover on this big blue marble than just driving directions. You can virtually travel the globe, visiting cities you'll never get to in real life. Walk around Manhattan with Street View, visit the swelling seas, and even look up to see the stars above you. With the time travel feature, you can go back decades to see what your house looked like, long before you lived there. Google Earth is less of a mapping service and more like a wealth of global information at your fingertips

f.lux

f.lux is the original maker of soft, yellow-hued lighting for digital screens. You can set it to your local time and your screen will automatically start to dim and turn a slight yellow color. You can customize the effect by increasing or decreasing the intensity and there are additional color effects, like "Movie mode" and "Darkroom" which drastically alter your screen's lighting, but under specific circumstances that you choose. f.lux is designed to help relieve eye strain due to late-night computer use. It is a great utility to have on your Mac.

Parcel - Delivery Tracking

Thanks to the mega-boom in online retail services, we are getting packages delivered more often than ever before, and not just during the holidays. Parcel is easy to use. All you have to do is copy a tracking number and then click on the plus (+) button in the Parcel app and the carrier information will be added automatically. You can add a title description and then keep an eye on how much longer before your package will be at your doorstep. You can add a widget to Notification Center and use Spotlight to look up tracking information. You can only track three packages at a time without an in-app purchase, but the premium price is only $2.99 per year.

The Unarchiver

If you regularly get large files sent to you, you'll love what the Unarchiver can do for you. It quickly unzips compressed and archived files from a number of different sources, including Zip RAR, 7-zip, and more, and it will open older archives from Stuffit, ARC and ISO disc images. As easy as it is to use Apple's Archive utility to simply unzip large files, the Unarchiver takes care of older content that can be a real pain to get open, since it uses smart detection to encode files correctly so that you won't end up with a bunch of garbled text. It is a fantastic secondary utility for opening files on your Mac.

After recording the section you want to use as a GIF, you can edit it by trimming, resizing, and looping it. You can also add a caption to turn it into a meme. When you're done, you can upload it to Giphy.com to share with the rest of the world. Who knows, maybe your GIF will go viral.

Consumption of entertainment is going digital and it is much easier to simply watch one of your DVD or Blu-ray discs as a digital file right in iTunes instead of having to walk over to your shelf, find the title, walk over to your player, insert the disc, and hit play. With Smart Converter, you can turn all of your movies, TV shows, and homemade videos into files that you can watch from whichever device you prefer. It is specially designed to make it easy to resize and convert files into content fit for your Apple TV, Mac, iPad, or iPhone, but you can also select and convert for dozens of devices, including non-Apple products. When the conversion is finished, simply add it to whatever streaming service you use with your device and your content is ready to watch. It is super easy to use for conversion beginners, too.

2018.12.15 01:33 brunotaut The Ultimate List of photo editing tools in 2018. 210 pieces of software (excluding mobile)

Hey, photo lovers!
Another year passed and I’m here with the renewed list of photo editing software.
The short story behind this list: I’ve started this research for my project Photolemur in July 2016.
The first list was '61 Photo Editing Tools and Apps'. After the very first post in 2016, I’ve got a lot of suggestions from redditors and decided to complete another list 104 Photo Editing Tools You Should Know About.
Then, Michael Zhang, Petapixel’s Editor, asked me to repost this list on Petapixel. The article got 5,419 shares and tons of comments with a new portion of great tools for photo editing. The next list came with 148 photo editing tools Then, ten months after, I’ve published a new list 186 photo editing tools and apps. The biggest list ever existed.
Today I’m no longer with Photolemur (I’ve left Photolemur a week ago). But I decided to continue doing this research. And the next steps will be putting all this software to the website with filters and user rating option. Actually, I’ve already bought the domain :) photo-index.com
If someone of you, redditors wants to help me with building the website - just send me a message.
What has changed in the new list:
Some of the apps had gone away from the market (you’ll find them in the list). Also, during my new research, I’ve found that there is almost 100 photo editing mobile apps on the market (in the previous list there were only 31 mobile apps). And I decided to create the separate list of photo editing mobile apps. It will be live very soon! So, there is no mobile apps section in this list. I’ve got a lot of comments about including some kind of recommendations to the list. So, the first 5 to 10 items in each section are the best one (in my personal opinion).
As always, I want to say thank you, redditors!
In the beginning, there were only 61 photo tools, and I thought that it’s a huge list! :)
Now we have the list of 210 tools for photo editing and photo manipulation (excluding 97 mobile apps)!

2018.04.20 05:45 lavenderflore Tools / apps to make brand name collages?

Hey, so I've noticed a ton of people have these beautiful collages as their covershots where the picture of the item is bordered by a vertical (sometimes horizontal) image of the BRAND logo. Banana Republic, Anthropologie, what have you. I tried out 4 or 5 different free online photo collage makers and none of them offer the template needed to do this - they offer a square split straight down the middle but not one where you can just tuck a vertical column to the side of an image.
Just made my own in Photoshop and it took like an hour. Is there a simpler way to do this?

2018.03.13 09:54 FinnagainsAwake Reddit and the Struggle to Detoxify the Internet - by Andrew Marantz (The New Yorker) 18 March 2018 (2 of 2)

(Part Two of Two - Part One https://www.reddit.com/CapitalistParadise/comments/842oiq/reddit_and_the_struggle_to_detoxify_the_internet/?st=jepf5isq&sh=03cf0f2d)
In retrospect, although Facebook denies this, it seems clear that the company was preparing for a blow that was about to land. On February 16th, the special counsel Robert Mueller filed an indictment against several Russian individuals and businesses, including the Internet Research Agency, a company aligned with the Kremlin. The indictment mentioned Facebook thirty-five times, and not in ways that made the platform seem like a “force for good in democracy.” According to recent reporting by the Daily Beast, the Internet Research Agency also seeded Reddit with disinformation during the 2016 election. (A group of impostors even tried to set up an A.M.A.) Last Monday, the Washington Post reported that the Senate Intelligence Committee will question Reddit executives about this; the same day, Huffman admitted that the company had “found and removed a few hundred accounts” associated with Russian propaganda. (A Reddit representative told me that the company has been coöperating with congressional investigators “for months,” although they haven’t spoken about it publicly.) As in all such disinformation campaigns, the Russians did not act alone: their messages were upvoted and repeated by thousands of unsuspecting Americans. “I believe the biggest risk we face as Americans is our own ability to discern reality from nonsense,” Huffman wrote. “I wish there was a solution as simple as banning all propaganda, but it’s not that easy.”
Zuckerberg recently set a “personal challenge” for himself: “enforcing our policies and preventing misuse of our tools.” This seems to be a reversal for Zuckerberg, who was once a fake-news truther. Two days after the 2016 election, he said, “The idea that fake news on Facebook, of which it’s a very small amount of the content, influenced the election in any way, I think, is a pretty crazy idea. Voters make decisions based on their lived experience.” This was a pretty crazy idea, and Zuckerberg has been walking it back ever since. It’s obvious that what we see online affects how we think and feel. We know this in part because Facebook has done research on it. In 2012, without notice or permission, Facebook tweaked the feeds of nearly seven hundred thousand of its users, showing one group more posts containing “positive emotional content” and the other more “negative emotional content.” Two years later, Facebook declassified the experiment and published the results. Users were livid, and, after that, Facebook either stopped conducting secret experiments or stopped admitting to them. But the results of the experiment were clear: the people with happier feeds acted happier, and vice versa. The study’s authors called it “massive-scale emotional contagion.” Since then, social media has only grown in size and influence, and the persuasive tools available to advertisers, spies, politicians, and propagandists have only become sharper. During the 2016 election, a few Russian impostors affected many Americans’ beliefs and, presumably, votes. With another election coming up, most of the loopholes that the Russians exploited have not been closed, and the main loophole—the open, connected, massively contagious world of social media—might not be closable.
When I raised this issue with Huffman over dinner last summer, he said, “I go back and forth on whether Reddit is the tail or the dog. I think it’s a bit of both.” First, he laid out the tail hypothesis: “Reddit is a reflection of reality. People are enthusiastic about Bernie or Trump in real life, so they go on Reddit and talk about how much they like Bernie or Trump. So far, so good.” Then he laid out the dog hypothesis, which his fellow social-media executives almost never acknowledge—that reality is also a reflection of social media. “All sorts of weird things can happen online,” he said. “Imagine I post a joke where the point is to be offensive—like, to imply, ‘This is something that a racist person would say’—but you misread the context and think, ‘Yeah, that racist guy has a good point.’ That kind of dynamic, I think, explains a lot of what happened on The_Donald, at least in the early days—someone keeps pushing a joke or a meme to see how far they can take it, and the answer turns out to be Pretty fucking far.”
Leftist communities on Reddit often implore the company to ban The_Donald. So far, Huffman has demurred. “There are arguments on both sides,” he said, “but, ultimately, my view is that their anger comes from feeling like they don’t have a voice, so it won’t solve anything if I take away their voice.” He thought of something else to say, but decided against it. Then he took a swig of beer and said it anyway. “I’m confident that Reddit could sway elections,” he told me. “We wouldn’t do it, of course. And I don’t know how many times we could get away with it. But, if we really wanted to, I’m sure Reddit could have swayed at least this election, this once.” That’s a terrifying thought. It’s also almost certainly true.
On August 11th, Huffman’s alma mater, the University of Virginia, was overrun by white nationalists carrying torches. “I was on a plane when I saw the news, and I got really emotional,” Huffman said. He told his employees, “If any of these people are on Reddit, I want them gone. Nuke ’em.” This felt cathartic, but personal catharsis is an awful way to make policy. “Luckily, my team knew me well enough to go, ‘Steve, you’re pissed off right now. Let’s talk about it more rationally on Monday.’ ”
Early the next week, Reddit banned Physical_Removal. In Charlottesville, James Alex Fields, one of the white nationalists, had driven a car into a crowd of counterprotesters, injuring nineteen and killing a woman named Heather Heyer. “This is a good thing,” the top post on Physical_Removal read. “They are mockeries of life and need to fucking go.” Reddit had a rule prohibiting content that “encourages or incites violence,” and this was a violation of that rule. Huffman said, “We’d had our eye on that community for a while, and it felt good to get rid of them, I have to say. But it still didn’t feel like enough.”
“Encouraging or inciting violence” was a narrow standard, and Huffman and his team agreed to expand it. Four words became thirty-six: “Do not post content that encourages, glorifies, incites, or calls for violence or physical harm against an individual or a group of people; likewise, do not post content that glorifies or encourages the abuse of animals.” This, too, required interpretation, and forced the company to create a non-exhaustive list of exceptions (“educational, newsworthy, artistic, satire, documentary”). Still, it made the team’s intentions clearer. Jessica Ashooh, Reddit’s head of policy, spent four years as a policy consultant in Abu Dhabi. “I know what it’s like to live under censorship,” she said. “My internal check, when I’m arguing for a restrictive policy on the site, is Do I sound like an Arab government? If so, maybe I should scale it back.” On the other hand, she said, “people hide behind the notion that there’s a bright line between ideology and action, but some ideologies are inherently more violent than others.”
In October, on the morning the new policy was rolled out, Ashooh sat at a long conference table with a dozen other employees. Before each of them was a laptop, a mug of coffee, and a few hours’ worth of snacks. “Welcome to the Policy Update War Room,” she said. “And, yes, I’m aware of the irony of calling it a war room when the point is to make Reddit less violent, but it’s too late to change the name.” The job of policing Reddit’s most pernicious content falls primarily to three groups of employees—the community team, the trust-and-safety team, and the anti-evil team—which are sometimes described, respectively, as good cop, bad cop, and RoboCop. Community stays in touch with a cross-section of redditors, asking them for feedback and encouraging them to be on their best behavior. When this fails and redditors break the rules, trust and safety punishes them. Anti-evil, a team of back-end engineers, makes software that flags dodgy-looking content and sends that content to humans, who decide what to do about it.
Ashooh went over the plan for the day. All at once, they would replace the old policy with the new policy, post an announcement explaining the new policy, warn a batch of subreddits that they were probably in violation of the new policy, and ban another batch of subreddits that were flagrantly, irredeemably in violation. I glanced at a spreadsheet with a list of the hundred and nine subreddits that were about to be banned (KKK, KillAllJews, KilltheJews, KilltheJoos), followed by the name of the employee who would carry out each deletion, and, if applicable, the reason for the ban (“mostly just swastikas?”). “Today we’re focussing on a lot of Nazi stuff and bestiality stuff,” Ashooh said. “Context matters, of course, and you shouldn’t get in trouble for posting a swastika if it’s a historical photo from the 1936 Olympics, or if you’re using it as a Hindu symbol. But, even so, there’s a lot that’s clear-cut.” I asked whether the same logic—that the Nazi flag was an inherently violent symbol—would apply to the Confederate flag, or the Soviet flag, or the flag under which King Richard fought the Crusades. “We can have those conversations in the future,” Ashooh said. “But we have to start somewhere.”
At 10 a.m., the trust-and-safety team posted the announcement and began the purge. “Thank you for letting me do DylannRoofInnocent,” one employee said. “That was one of the ones I really wanted.”
“What is ReallyWackyTicTacs?” another employee asked, looking down the list.
“Trust me, you don’t want to know,” Ashooh said. “That was the most unpleasant shit I’ve ever seen, and I’ve spent a lot of time looking into Syrian war crimes.”
Some of the comments on the announcement were cynical. “They don’t actually want to change anything,” one redditor wrote, arguing that the bans were meant to appease advertisers. “It was, in fact, never about free speech, it was about money.” One trust-and-safety manager, a young woman wearing a leather jacket and a ship captain’s cap, was in charge of monitoring the comments and responding to the most relevant ones. “Everyone seems to be taking it pretty well so far,” she said. “There’s one guy, freespeechwarrior, who seems very pissed, but I guess that makes sense, given his username.”
“People are making lists of all the Nazi subs getting banned, but nobody has noticed that we’re banning bestiality ones at the same time,” Ashooh said.
“No one wants to admit it,” an employee said. “ ‘Guys, I was just browsing HorseCock and I couldn’t help but notice . . .’ ”
The woman in the captain’s cap said, “O.K., someone just asked, ‘How will the exact phrase “kill yourself” be handled?’ ”
“It all depends on context,” Ashooh said. “They’re going to get tired of hearing that, but it’s true.”
“Uh-oh, looks like we missed a bestiality sub,” the woman in the captain’s cap said. “Apparently, SexWithDogs was on our list, but DogSex was not.”
“Did you go to DogSex?” Ashooh said.
“Yep.”
“And what’s on it?”
“I mean . . .”
“Are there people having sex with dogs?”
“Oh, yes, very much.”
“Yeah, ban it.”
“I’m going to get more cheese sticks,” the woman in the captain’s cap said, standing up. “How many cheese sticks is too many in one day? At what point am I encouraging or glorifying violence against my own body?”
“It all depends on context,” Ashooh said.
I understood why other companies had been reluctant to let me see something like this. Never again would I be able to read a lofty phrase about a social-media company’s shift in policy—“open and connected,” or “encouraging meaningful interactions”—without imagining a group of people sitting around a conference room, eating free snacks and making fallible decisions. Social networks, no matter how big they get or how familiar they seem, are not ineluctable forces but experimental technologies built by human beings. We can tell ourselves that these human beings aren’t gatekeepers, or that they have cleansed themselves of all bias and emotion, but this would have no relation to reality. “I have biases, like everyone else,” Huffman told me once. “I just work really hard to make sure that they don’t prevent me from doing what’s right.”
In a perfect world, a thirty-four-year-old in soccer shoes wouldn’t have such fearsome power. In the world we live in, the least social-media executives can do is acknowledge that power. Last November, a group of computer scientists at three universities published a study called “You Can’t Stay Here: The Efficacy of Reddit’s 2015 Ban Examined Through Hate Speech.” They parsed a data set of a hundred million Reddit posts. Did the ban “diminish hateful behavior” over all, or did it merely “relocate such behavior to different parts of the site”? They concluded that the ban had worked: “Users participating in the banned subreddits either left the site or (for those who remained) dramatically reduced their hate speech usage.”
Melissa Tidwell, Reddit’s general counsel, told me, “I am so tired of people who repeat the mantra ‘Free speech!’ but then have nothing else to say. Look, free speech is obviously a great ideal to strive toward. Who doesn’t love freedom? Who doesn’t love speech? But then, in practice, every day, gray areas come up.” Earlier that day, I’d watched Tidwell and a colleague spend several minutes debating whether a soft-core porn subreddit, GentlemenBoners, should be included in standard search results.
“Does free speech mean literally anyone can say anything at any time?” Tidwell continued. “Or is it actually more conducive to the free exchange of ideas if we create a platform where women and people of color can say what they want without thousands of people screaming, ‘Fuck you, light yourself on fire, I know where you live’? If your entire answer to that very difficult question is ‘Free speech,’ then, I’m sorry, that tells me that you’re not really paying attention.”
It has become a tradition for tech companies to release elaborate, self-referential jokes every April Fools’ Day. The point is to generate some free publicity that will make the company seem quirky and relatable, but it can also have the opposite effect, especially when the premise of the joke is Silicon Valley’s unprecedented power. A few years ago, Twitter announced that it would start charging for vowels. Last year, Google shared a mockup of its new data center on Mars, and Amazon revealed voice-recognition software that would take commands from pets. The companies hadn’t actually initiated any of these projects, but they probably could, one day, if they wanted to. Get it?
Last April Fools’, instead of a parody announcement, Reddit unveiled a genuine social experiment. It was called Place, and it was a blank square, a thousand pixels by a thousand pixels. In the beginning, all million pixels were white. Once the experiment started, anyone could change a single pixel, anywhere on the grid, to one of sixteen colors. The only restriction was speed: the algorithm allowed each redditor to alter just one pixel every five minutes. “That way, no one person can take over—it’s too slow,” Josh Wardle, the Reddit product manager in charge of Place, explained. “In order to do anything at scale, they’re gonna have to coöperate.”
Place had been active for about twenty minutes when I stopped by, and Wardle was huddled over his laptop, frantically refreshing dozens of tabs. So far, the square was mostly blank, with a few stray dots blinking in and out of existence. But redditors were making plans in the comments and, in true Reddit fashion, clinging to those plans with cultish intensity. The Blue Empire was conspiring to turn the whole square blue; the Red Empire vowed to make it red; already, they were on a war footing. Other groups planned elaborate messages, fractal patterns, and references to various memes. A multi-partisan group—leftists, Trump supporters, patriotic libertarians, and pre-political teen-agers—decided to draw an American flag in the center of the square. They congregated at AmericanFlagInPlace, where they hashed out the exact dimensions, the shapes of the stars and stripes, and strategies for repelling invaders. Meanwhile, a group of nihilists at BlackVoid prepared to blot out whatever the other groups created.
Wardle went to great lengths to show me that Place was a pure democracy—the algorithm was designed so that, once it went live, all he could do was watch, along with everyone else. Now that he was watching, he seemed deeply nervous. “The idea was ‘Let’s put up a very simple microcosm of the Internet and just see what happens,’ ” he said. “Reddit itself is not the most complex idea. It’s sort of a blank canvas. The community takes that and does all sorts of creative things with it.”
“And some terrible things,” I said.
He paused. “I’m pretty confident,” he said. “I’d be lying if I said I was a hundred per cent confident.” Already, one of the top comments on Place read, “I give this an hour until swastikas.” Later, one of Wardle’s colleagues told me, “That was what kept Josh up at night. Before this went live, he was literally calculating, ‘O.K., it takes a minimum of seventeen pixels to make a swastika—what if we open this up to the world, and the headline the next day is “Reddit: A Place to Draw Swastikas on the Internet”?’ ”
The upper-left corner was a choppy, flickering purple, as the Blue Empire and the Red Empire battled for dominance. A graffiti artist, or artists, wrote, “9/11 was an inside job”; a few minutes later, the “was” turned into “wasn’t,” and the “an” became “anime.” Elsewhere, “Dick butt” became “Dick butter,” then “Dick buffet.” And then the swastikas appeared—just a few of them, but enough to make Wardle raise the hood of his sweatshirt, retreat into an empty conference room, and shut the door, looking pallid.
In his office, Huffman met with Chris Slowe, Reddit’s first employee, who is now the chief technical officer.
“How is Place going?” Huffman asked.
“Pretty much as expected,” Slowe said. “A lot of memes, some Pokémon, and a barrage of dicks.”
“If there’s ever a Reddit musical, that wouldn’t be a bad title,” Huffman said. “Maybe I should write a memoir called ‘A Barrage of Dicks.’ ”
“I have faith in our people,” Slowe said.
Lunch was served: a shrimp-and-lentil salad and a vegan bean fricassee. People stood in the common area, holding paper plates, watching a live feed of Place on a wall-mounted TV.
One employee, reading the comments, said, “A bunch of people are finding swastikas and then telling everyone else where they are, so that people can go get rid of them.”
“I just saw it!” another said. He pointed to a section of the screen. As we watched, one swastika was erased and another was modified to become a Windows 95 logo. Eventually, the swastika-makers got bored and moved on.
At one point, the American flag caught on fire; the fire was stamped out, and the Reddit employees cheered.
“Feels like watching a football game in extreme slow motion,” one said.
“Or like watching the election results.”
“Oh, God, don’t say that.”
Toward the end, the square was a dense, colorful tapestry, chaotic and strangely captivating. It was a collage of hundreds of incongruous images: logos of colleges, sports teams, bands, and video-game companies; a transcribed monologue from “Star Wars”; likenesses of He-Man, David Bowie, the “Mona Lisa,” and a former Prime Minister of Finland. In the final hours, shortly before the experiment ended and the image was frozen for posterity, BlackVoid launched a surprise attack on the American flag. A dark fissure tore at the bottom of the flag, then overtook the whole thing. For a few minutes, the center was engulfed in darkness. Then a broad coalition rallied to beat back the Void; the stars and stripes regained their form, and, in the end, the flag was still there.
The final image contained no visible hate symbols, no violent threats, not even much nudity. Late in the day, Wardle emerged from hiding, poured himself a drink, and pushed back his hood. “It’s possible that I will be able to sleep tonight,” he said.

2017.09.27 16:02 brunotaut 186 photo editing tools and apps. The biggest list ever existed

Hey, photo lovers
Thanks to Everyone! This huge list is possible because of your help.
Short story behind the list: This post is a continuation of my previous three posts, dedicated to photo editing tools. I started this research for my project Photolemur in July 2016.
First list was '61 Photo Editing Tools and Apps'. After this first post in 2016, I got a lot of suggestions from redditors and decided to complete another list 104 Photo Editing Tools You Should Know About.
Then Michael Zhang, asked me to repost this list on Petapixel. The article got 5,419 shares and tons of comments with a new portion of great tools for photo editing. The next list comes with 148 photo editing tools.
Now, after 10 months have passed, I’ve got additional portion of photo editing tools and decided to publish a new huge list of the photo editing tools and apps.
And I want to say thank you, redditors. At the beginning, there were only 61 photo tools, and I thought that it’s a huge list! Huh :) Now we have 186 of them!
Just to make it easier to find something specific, the list is numbered. Enjoy! And let me know if I missed something important.
